This is regarded by many as ABBAs best song. It went on to inspire hits for the Sex Pistols, Girls Aloud and countless songwriters in between. It’s all here: the pathos and drama of intense romantic despair delivered via a peerless melody and a minor-to-major chorus explosion.

As you might have realised, I love making soup. It makes me feel all cosy knowing something nice is bubbling away on the hob.
Today's doup is a chicken and chickpea soup, lightly spiced with cumin, ginger and turmeric.
Recipe from Sophie Dahl.

First time making medeleines and quite pleased with how they turned out. Quite a few needed trimming (overfilled them) and a few have caught on the edges but not a bad effort.

Scotland would be one of the best sides in the world if they could play with this intensity against every team they face. Yet they only ever seem capable of doing so against England. Mindset issue?

Well this referee clearly just wants to make himself popular with the home crowd

A delightful (if rather muddy) walk this afternoon, starting at Beckwithshaw, passing several farms, through Haverah Park and around Beaver Dyke Reservoir.

First time ever watching an opera tonight. Thought I'd begin with one in English so I can understand what's going on.

First time making gnocchi from scratch tonight, and they've turned out okay. Served with a homemade winter pesto made from garlic, pine nuts, parmesan, baby spinach, rocket and watercress.

This next track really is the peak of Abba’s disco adventures and became an instant gay anthem. It's also contains a beguiling tension: in the throes of divorce from Björn, Agnetha sings a hymn to desire and sexual freedom with lyrics by her former husband.

Cooking from the "winter" chapter of a cookbook invariably means that at least one if the recipes will be devoted to Christmas dinner. Here is Sophie Dahl's take on the festive favourite.

Would people kindly stop sending me emails. Work is busy enough at the minute without lots of emails to answer.

Sophie Dahl says of her recipe: "This always reminds me of Christmas menus in posh hotels".

Writing about divorce is one thing; asking your ex-wife to sing it quite another. Björn has always declared that today's track is a work of fiction, however the song’s original working title, 'The Story of My Life', suggests otherwise.

Pasta puttanesca translates as "whore's pasta". It's full of bold, punchy flavours like garlic, chilli, anchovy and olives, and is meant to evoke Neopolitan streets and dangerous women in tight dresses.
