Interested in climate change, invasive predators, and cross-ecosystem linkages? Check out our newest paper in @aslo.org's L&O, from a fun experiment we ran three summers ago in California's Sierra Nevada, beautifully led by postdoc @chaevangelista.bsky.social!

We found that early low flows and non-native fish had additive, but not synergistic effects on stream insect emergence. Low flows shifted community structure, and brown trout increased the emergence of small-sized groups - and benthic algal biomass!

We subjected stream channels to future low-snowpack & early snowmelt scenarios, and to presence of brown trout, a global invader. We tracked dynamics of emerging insects—a key linkage connecting streams to the adjacent terrestrial environment

New paper by @chaevangelista.bsky.social and colleagues shows how California mountain river communities can be altered by climate change, through longer low flow periods, and the interaction of a predator, here the infamous brown trout.

Prolonged low flows and non‐native fish operate additively to alter insect emergence in mountain streams
Climate-induced flow alteration is decreasing snowpack and advancing snowmelt, subjecting mountain streams to longer low-flow periods. Yet, anticipating how stream ecosystems respond to prolonged low...

Long‐term data reveal widespread phenological change across major US estuarine food webs
Climate change is shifting the timing of organismal life-history events. Although consequential food-web mismatches can emerge if predators and prey shift at different rates, research on phenological...
