🇺🇦🇦🇹 Telegram a little differently than my usual:

About the Telegram groups themselves, the language and technology resources we all use, and our new unwelcome "member" - ChatGPT.

This is the most personal academic thing I've ever written. ♥️

Amazing work, integrating critical pedagogy to heritage language education through materials.
We need more examples of such perspectives for all heritage language education programs.

A wonderful analysis by Amanj Aziz for @theamargi.bsky.social which gives an idea of the recent situation in Rojava and exposes the "selective solidarity" when it comes to the Kurds.
Rojava exposes a habit of kafirising Kurds, treating their politics as outside the Ummah. This piece argues for a principled Muslim solidarity that rejects racist takfirism and recognises Kurdish diversity and rights. OPINION by Amanj Aziz

Rojava, Takfirism, and the Kurdish Place in the Ummah
The current situation in Rojava has once again exposed a deep rift in the Muslim Ummah’s moral compass. While Kurdish civilians are being displaced and subjected to military aggression, much of the…

Some media outlets cheered a recent decree by the transition government in Syria regarding Kurdish language without telling the larger context of colonial oppression. Here is a powerful and historically-aware account of what is going on in #Rojava / #Syrian
Bachtyar Ali, a prominent Kurdish intellectual and The Amargi columnist, explains why Rojava is being targeted from all sides and why it matters as an anti-fascist political project.

A highly progressive language policy is already in place in Kurdish-led Autonomous Region using Kurdish, Arabic, Armenian, Assyrian and Turkoman official languages and as medium of bilingual education. Sharaa's symbolic decree is not a step forward, but another move toward old style nationalism.
Ahmed al-Sharaa issues decree declaring Kurdish a national language that can be taught in schools in areas where Kurds are heavily present.

Decree also restores nationality to Kurds as 20% of them had been stripped of it in 1962, and makes Nowruz an official holiday.
