Revisiting “Remembering St. Martin’s Day in Tehran”

In light of the current developments in Iran, we would like to point out the blog “Remembering St. Martin’s Day in Tehran” (2022) by Roschanack Shaery-Yazdi. It offers a concise and thought-provoking reflection.

The very last time I celebrated St. Martin’s Day[1], a popular festival celebrated on the 11th November in some parts of East and West Flanders as well as in Germany, was actually in 1978 in Tehran. T...

If there is one institute at the @uantwerpen.be truly committed to collaborating with partners from the Global South, it is the @iobua.bsky.social. In times of geopolitical change, we need an institute like this more than ever, but the Flemish government does not seem to understand that. #saveIOB
The Flemish government’s unexpected decision not to renew IOB’s agreement puts €2.64M funding, 32 jobs, key programmes and global partnerships at risk. Support us! https://bit.ly/saveIOB

An intriguing reflection by my colleague Roschanack Shaery on her research stay in Japan. How a halal certificate in a fancy Italian restaurant in Tokyo made her reflect on Western attitudes toward the Muslim world.

Let's not forget Ukraine.
Greetings from Kyiv,
where the air raid alert has been ongoing for three hours.
Drones.

I’m furious that children have to spend their second day of school in shelters.

Nobody is coming to save us from this reality – nobody is coming from the outside and forcing it to end. That’s why it’s on us, the people on the ground, to force our government to stop the killing. (3/3)

Very good that this @standing-together.bsky.social-activist bluntly calls his government what it is: fascist. That kind of government - and those who support its genocidal policies - should be sanctioned and boycotted. But those who bravely resist it should receive all our support.
NOW: Over 100,000 people on the streets of Tel Aviv after a day of disruption! NO to the killing, NO to the abandonment. Right now all of us must act with all our strength against the extremists who want us to despair and to think they can’t be stopped. We won’t back down!

These are dangerous incitements — the language of an extremist government that never stops advancing racist policies. A government terrified of Arab voters, fearful of high Arab turnout in the coming elections, and determined to silence Arab voices in the very democracy it claims to defend. (3/7)
