The 40s/50s were the golden age for movie theatres. Yonge St had as many as 12 between Bloor/Queen. The big 4. The Uptown, Odeon Carlton, The Imperial and Loews Yonge St. As well as The Downtown, The Biltmore, Rio, Coronet and others. The theatres started to die out as TV became the dominant media.

I bit late with this. But in honour of St Patrick's Day I present the statues commemorating those that left Ireland during the potato famine of the 1840s in Dublin and Toronto. These were displayed in 2007.

The Yonge Street Subway turns 71 this month. This was a massive event for The Strip. The novelty of the subway alone brought more people downtown. For a great many of us this was our lifeline to Yonge Street. And for many it still is. Happy Birthday Yonge Subway.

11 years ago this week The World's Biggest Bookstore closed. Online shopping had rendered the store unprofitable. A fate compounded by the fact that it was (in its later years) owned by Chapters/Indigo who already owned a store in the Eaton Centre.

It was on this date Feb 2nd 1969 that a landmark concert took place on The Yonge Street Strip. Led Zeppelin played the first of two 1969 shows at the Rockpile. This show did not sell out. However by the time they returned in Aug 1969 they were massive stars. Image from Led Zeppelin website.

The calendar has just turned. Cool stuff happened in the month of February on the Yonge Street Strip. For example in Feb 1964 a young folk singer named "Gord" Lightfoot begins a residency at Steeles Tavern at 349 Yonge Street. He performs there regularly until October.
