Happy birthday to the great but often underappreciated drummer Sam Woodyard, born on January, 7, 1925, and gone too young at age 63 in 1988. A few years ago I wrote about Woodyard and Sonny Greer for JazzTimes under the banner of the Ellington Drummers.
