The photograph depicts a winter forest dominated by a dead ponderosa pine standing prominently near the center of the frame. Its trunk leans at a pronounced angle, twisted and contorted, the result of long-term exposure to wind, snow load, and gradual structural failure over time. The bark is deeply fissured and textured, characteristic of an older ponderosa, with snow collecting in cracks and along broken surfaces. The tree’s crown is entirely bare. Its branches are thin, brittle, and skeletal, extending outward in irregular, angular patterns against the pale winter sky. Many limbs are broken or truncated, leaving sharp, abrupt ends that clearly mark the tree as lifeless. No needles remain, and the upper structure appears weathered and eroded, suggesting the tree has been dead for years, slowly deteriorating in place rather than recently fallen. Surrounding the dead pine are living conifers—denser, fuller, and upright—whose dark needles retain fresh snow. These living trees frame the dead ponderosa, emphasizing the contrast between ongoing growth and long-standing decay. At ground level, the forest floor is blanketed in deep, undisturbed snow, forming smooth, rounded drifts around the bases of trunks and partially burying young evergreen saplings.

There’s always something to find when tramping in woods. Cruger Island on the Hudson River. You can hike across a causeway from Bard, but beware the tide! We waded through water up to our knees on the way back. Later we launched our kayaks from Glasco & paddled across the river.

He wakes you when you sleep near the water in a white bed. I saw the crow, a lone shadow high in an evergreen. This is his call of discovery--a piece of black bread. I pounded something with a stone. Sometimes I think it was my heart. Sometimes I think it was a stranger's heart, someone now I will never know.
