Historian & writer. Britain, Ireland, empire, music. Latest book is on John Cale's Paris 1919 for 33 1/3. Next: histories of African people/music in Ireland. “Pipe-sucking radical”-Mail on Sunday. Views here are my own, not my employer's.

This is an essay I wrote about music and grief and sunsets and water and grief and brothers and grief. It’d mean a hell of a lot if you set aside a little time to read it.

Is there a word for the panic that sets in when you finish one book and don't know what to read next? It's a sort of fugue state of dashing from bookshelf to bookstack to desk to table, picking up and discarding and reconsidering, writhing, soul-searching, self-doubting... the worst.

Dylan Marlais Thomas died on this day in 1953 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Greenwich Village, NYC. He was just 39 years old.

Read some of his poems today. Treat yourself to A Child's Christmas in Wales.

Big day around here. Sat down to grade, found the very first essay was written by AI, threw my laptop off a very high building, walked off into the sea.

This is quite interesting if you want to drill down into how some of the new NYC mayor's policy proposals have worked elsewhere (while bearing in mind that NYC is not Waco or Vienna or Alexandria).

The NYC mayoral candidate has made history. Learn more about the groundbreaking measures he’s proposing, from free buses to city-owned supermarkets.

Just dropped the eldest off at the airport for her class trip to Washington DC. They've had to scrap their Smithsonian visits because of the shutdown, but their photos of the mangled White House are going to make a hell of a yearbook spread.

It's a cliche to say that any book is the product of many hands, but it's a true cliche, and this book certainly wouldn't have taken the shape it did without Pat's aid and enthusiasm. 🙏
I helped author Mark Doyle with a bit of archival research which he graciously thanked me for inside this new book - I’m reading it now and it brings a wealth of fresh perspectives, thoughtful discussions and more.

DMs open, if you want those links from AAUP.
Fellow US faculty, it might be a good idea to begin drafting resolutions opposing the Trump loyalty oaths, if you haven't already. Happy to share some resources sent around by the AAUP yesterday, if interested--just DM me.

I'd just been wondering about the overlap (or, perhaps more accurately, relay race) between British imperialism and British fascism, when lo and behold this article by @liamliburd.bsky.social showed up in my inbox. Turns out Black activists & intellectuals were connecting these dots decades ago.

Dangerously close to finishing the first draft of a book I've been avoiding for probably 5 yrs. While procrastinating on this, I've written 3 other books (1 published) and a bunch of articles and stories (some published). Tempted to never finish this stupid book so my productivity doesn't collapse.
