Where the bee sucks, there suck I
I got diverted by a stained glass window by Philip William Cross at St Bartholomew's, Burwash.
His annunciation is from Fra Angelo and his visitation from Mariotto Albertinelli. I'm still working on his Jesus but John and Mary are from two separate paintings by Perugino.

Another connection between the stained glass panels at Blickling Hall (copies at Erpingham) and Gerhard Remisch or Everhard Rensig at the V&A.

Blickling (📷Annie Chapman) on the left, V&A on the right. They have the same design.

Ninian Comper used Martin Schongauer at St Mary's Wellingborough. The general idea is the same. Joseph pulls down a palm, helped by angels, to get at the dates to give to Mary and Jesus. The details are different, though, except for the donkey, he's the same.

The stained glass incorporates a bit of Martin Schongauer, his rest on the flight into Egypt (The Met). The guy doing the massacring is also a dead ringer of a figure that appears in an old testament scene at the V&A. See further down below.

As it's John's day, something I learnt in 2025. He is often depicted holding a palm in medieval stained glass despite not being a martyr. This is due to his having carried a heaven sent palm before Mary's coffin during her funeral procession.

I have wondered, in the past, if Ninian Comper's shepherd with a bagpipe at St George's , Brinsop, came from this painting but there is not enough matching detail for me to be sure. However, I am sure that is Botticelli's baby jesus!

Well, they'll stone you when you're trying to be so good
They'll stone you just like they said they would
They'll stone you when you're trying to go home
And they'll stone you when you're there all alone
But I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned

Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child’s balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying
Darkness must overshadow all
his bounds,
Palpable darkness, and blot
out three days;
Last, with one midnight
stroke, all the first-born
Of Egypt must lie dead. Thus
with ten wounds
The river-dragon tamed at
length submits

This is another of Burlison & Grylls hybrid Annunciations. The angel is taken from Martin Schongauer's engraving (The Met) but Mary is not from Schongauer. So where does she come from if anywhere? My Christmas Day puzzle.

Three designs from Harley MS 4940, a 14th century illuminated manuscript. I believe these are three astrological diagrams - I'm afraid I wasn't paying too much attention. I picked them because, although they are paintings, they have the appearance of collages using coloured and patterned paper.

This was discovered when my brother cleared his attic recently. Pity I'm not still at work, I could have put it on the wall by my desk.

Such a surprise to see Alfred Hassam mentioned. The 60's were a heady time in British stained glass, so much colour, so much abstraction, and Heaton Butler & Bayne were at the fore. Was it Hassam? The last time I looked so little was known but when he died so did their music it seems.
