this weekend i visited a beloved local cafe/record store and they had a bathroom labeled "Gay Bathroom". when we complimented the sign the barista said sometimes shitty people ask if there's a different bathroom they can use, so they have a second one in the other room labeled "Super Gay Bathroom"

The message from the stars was very long and complex, but contained instructions how to decode and parse it incrementally.

There was an image, of a very cute furry creature. And a text, which loosely translated said:

"Send cat pics please!'

(Mon train a quand même pu partir.)
Power cut at Brussels-Midi station, vendors stuck in their shops, emergency lighting and silence. And without electricity, it's less convenient to buy tickets. RER train instead of an IC. Cool vibe (nope), can't wait for hibernation 😬

When your past self forgot that they booked first-class Eurostar tickets, you get better seats, and you happen to be in London at the right time to visit Present & Correct, what more could you ask for on a Saturday? (Sent from under the sea.)
A heads up. We are closed from 6pm on 6th February until the 16th. No shipping. If you need anything V Day related please order in plenty of time.

Thank you :-)

Excited to be speaking at the IHR Food History seminar on 12 February 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm.

Book a place to hear about cheesemaking and women’s dominance of the dairy in early modern England.

Online via Zoom so no real cheese this time I’m afraid.

Hey #earlymodern Anglo-world history friends: Is there an English-language version of TESORO de Covarrubias or the RAE DICCIONARIO HISTORICO for Spanish or ARTFL for French? Like, searchable databases of 17th/18th/19th-c definitions and connotations of words?

Moths are excellent pets as they ask for nothing and all you have to do to acquire lots of them is open a window and switch on seven lamps and put a classic early Leonard Cohen LP on at a pleasant volume.

People who were actually enslaved believed that chattel slavery would end one day.

I'm sorry but to me that suggests that you [who are not enslaved in 2026] can also imagine an end to the current horrors.

"No one has ever been charged or prosecuted for the killing of Patrice Lumumba, but a lot of people have been considered responsible for it."
Excellent write up by Professor Foluke Adebisi.
Pair it with Césaire's *A Season in the Congo* (1966).
In what is often described as the most significant assassination of the 20th century, the execution of Patrice Lumumba of Congo possibly occurred on 17 January 1961. I wrote about him and the global participation in his horrific execution
