A research team from the Orangutan Information Centre (OIC) recently identified several Tapanuli orangutans in a peat forest near Lumut Maju Village, Central Tapanuli, approximately 32 kilometers north of the Batang Toru ecosystem.

Visually, it was a treat.
It also felt low-key shitpost-y, and not just because Indonesian horror culture often leans into absurdity. The original Indonesian title also seemed to be in on it, and it is why the non-Indonesian translation threw me off.

Visually, it was a treat.

Sure, the Church sucks in many ways, but ordinary Catholics have much healthier, closer-to-nature (read: pagan) ways of dealing with loss and longing. Grief doesn’t magically disappear after a few days—not even after a year. Pieces of it stay with you, and ritual cycles help.

I still stand by the fact that making blanket statements condemning anything remotely foreign shows a lack of imagination.
But, the fact all of this is happening the same year #Indonesia joined #BRICS should make one pause, even if only for a moment.
