Principal of St Chad’s College Durham. Queen of roast dinners. Allegedly.
Lucky enough to have seen quite a few of his plays (some starring John Kani, with whom he had a remarkable partnership) in venues as varied as London, Cape Town, Boston & even on Mull. Though he spoke primarily against injustice in South Africa, his message resonated around the world. Unforgettable.

May I set ajar
The doors of closed minds. Words come and words go
And poetry is pain as well as passion,
But in the large flights of imagination
I see for one crammed second, order so
Explicit I need no more persuasion

Norman Cornish, Crucifixion (1960). For Cornish the telegraph pole represents technological progress, the crucifixion its human cost. Excellent exhibition @thebowesmuseum.bsky.social on Cornish and Lowry
