“The humanities simply don’t fit a corporate model because they are just not monetizable in the same way the sciences or even the social sciences are. And the deeper reason they’re coming under attack is that free thought and rigorous, free inquiry is dangerous to executive power.”

When the AI slop summer reading list dropped last year I knew I had to write about making book lists. Thanks to @thebaffler.com for letting me go long with bewildered nostalgia & regret on 20 years of Internet book culture & how we made the slop book list inevitable. thebaffler.com/after-the-fa...

The labor involved in making lists was as close to the opposite of a transcendent reading experience as a disillusioned culture worker could get.

yesssss my mayor saying on national television to ABOLISH ICE!
Mamdani: "I am in support of abolishing ICE. What we see is an entity that has no interest in fulfilling its stated reason to exist. We're seeing a government agency that is supposed to be enforcing some kind of immigration law, but instead what it's doing is terrorizing people."

Her mother called 911 for help… and got turned into ICE instead.

They placed her and her five year old daughter in a hotel and told them not to contact anyone.

ICE didn’t want the community fighting for them.

Mother & daughter have been deported to Honduras and the local police were complicit.

People who were actually enslaved believed that chattel slavery would end one day.

I'm sorry but to me that suggests that you [who are not enslaved in 2026] can also imagine an end to the current horrors.

These white supremacists are depraved.

I've read most of the scholarship about US policing since the early 20th century. What you learn from this is that violence is inherent. You cannot "separate" out violence from policing. Police in the U.S. are violence workers.

Senate Democrats absolutely have to shut the govt down to stop this ICE insanity in the Twin Cities. This is not sustainable & cannot be normalized. Any Democratic vote to provide money to the thugs who are brutalizing this community is a grave betrayal to the people here. Accountability can't wait.

all these images out of Minnesota of ICE agents being brutally violent.

You can’t reform this. Abolishing ICE is the only way.
