2000 Great Songs #1221: Dreams. The Cranberries thoroughly saturated the airwaves in 1993, and while I can't say they're a band I visited much after that, this track, for all the wondrously dramatic bombast, holds up great.

The downside of accumulating an obscenely large music collection is that sometimes you let way too much time pass between visits with old favorites.

Cranking up Quadrophenia tonight, and damn what an accomplishment. Absolute peak Who, just brilliant from start to finish.

2000 Great Songs #1220: Engine Red. More buoyant power pop from The Shazam, one of the greatest bands you've (probably) never heard. Nothing profound here, just a biting jab at the drunken party guest.

2000 Great Songs #1219: Quicksilver Girl. Gentle, feather-light psychedelia from the Steve Miller Band's early days, when they were still a cool, underrated Summer of Love psych/blues band and not the radio-clogging pop singles monster they'd become.

2000 Great Songs #1218: Under The Surface. Feels like a bit of a 90s indie rock resurgence these days; it'd be great to see some of that love headed Bettie Serveert's way. Their Palomine LP remains an all-time fave, particularly this grungy power ballad.

2000 Great Songs #1217: Up On The Sun. The Meat Puppets transplant Creedence's swamp boogie into the Arizona desert, a sun-fried psychedelic Americana jam a little too skewed for straight country rock.

2000 Great Songs #1216: You're So Clever. Local Bay Area band the Orange Peels offer gentle 60s-style sunshine pop, all jangle & sweetness, but with an undercurrent of snark to keep it sharp.

2000 Great Songs #1215: Unconsciously Screamin'. On their last indie blast before going major label, the Flaming Lips add some sonic muscle to their acid-drenched post-punk stew, a raging wall-shaker yet surprisingly catchy.

2000 Great Songs #1214: The Other One. Just in time to help commemorate the sad loss of Bob Weir, here's one of the Grateful Dead's most essential live showcases, all galloping rhythm and stoned bliss and post-Summer-of-Love comedown stretched out to infinity.

2000 Great Songs #1213: Options. English indie rockers Gomez set aside their quirky eclecticism for a straight-up feel-good pop song, still tricked out but ultimately just a disarmingly nice way to start the day.

2000 Great Songs #1212: Happy The Man. A rare single from Gabriel-era Genesis, the sound of a prog band trying (only partially successfully) to write a pop song, redeemed by its charm and that jangly guitar hook.

2000 Great Songs #1211: Rocket Machine. Between Rain Parade and Mazzy Star, David Roback teamed up with Dream Syndicate's Kendra Smith as Opal, laying out some dark, bluesy, psychedelic grooves, an 80s garage band fit for woozy late nights.

2000 Great Songs #1210: Medication. A dark, slinky psychedelic groove from old-school 60s garage band The Standells (though I was introduced via a cover by 80s psych revivalists The Vipers)--hypnotic & cool either way.

New imaginary album: Following some online chatter about U2's Rattle & Hum--I've personally always found the blend of studio & live tracks kind of a disjointed mess--I decided to concoct an alternative 1988 studio LP. Actually came out kinda cool.

2000 Great Songs #1209: Willow Jane. A chiming, effervescent country rock track from the late Neal Casal, the sort of casually amiable track that makes you slap your head and wonder how this guy never got the attention he deserved.

2000 Great Songs #1208: Is She Really Going Out With Him? On the shortlist of "played the living f*ck out of that one back at summer camp" monsters, Joe Jackson's pre-Mr. Brightside jealousy anthem nails the perfect, never-equaled bassline.

2000 Great Songs #1207: Living In The Past. My mixed feelings about Jethro Tull are overridden here by those quaint little flute-driven instrumental passages that feel like they've been part of musical consciousness forever.

2000 Great Songs #1206: Rebel Girl. Bikini Kill's 1993 romp seems almost too calculated to serve as an earnest feminist anthem, but easily gets there on Kathleen Hanna's supernatural charm.

But Bob may have been the most interesting rhythm guitarist in rock & roll.

2000 Great Songs #1205: For The Singer Of R.E.M. 80s/90s indie rockers Firehose politely offer a song tracing a straight line from their roots as jazzy punk innovators Minutemen to the catchier jangle pop of their college radio peers.
