summary:

Distantly, he thinks about Robin. She had always been the more social of the two of them, even when neither of them really had friends growing up. Robin was the one invited to sleepovers and movie nights and the like—Sunday was the one who stayed up late into the night just to read over the missive the Family had given him. But Robin was also the one who stayed up late with him and told him about the movie she’d just seen and how she’d like to watch it with him at some point.

Sunday had appreciated the gesture, but he’d never quite understood how she couldn’t tell how busy he was with everything, and had assumed that when she stopped asking she’d simply figured out that he didn’t have the time and was being respectful of that.

(Sunday knows now that there was simply no point in her asking a question she already knew the answer to. He had not convinced her that he didn’t have the time—he had simply crushed the hope that he would make some for her.)

Jiaoqiu shakes his head, a sharp frown on his face as he looks at Moze. “This is new to me too.” The words come out slowly, as if the healer isn’t sure of them until they leave his lips. “I’ve never seen anything like this before, and it’s like nothing I’ve studied before…” He trails off, staring at the soft pink petals in the palm of his hand.

Moze doesn’t like the look on Jiaoqiu’s face, the way he reacts, as if he is the one who is sick, not Moze. It feels even worse to him than his own illness, curse, whatever this is—and suddenly he’s coughing again, pressing his hand against his mask to muffle the sound.

Jiaoqiu’s head shoots up at the sound, and he reaches over and gently takes his arm (with the hand that isn’t holding the petals, Jiaoqiu is very considerate of him like that). “Let’s go to my room,” he tells him between coughs. Moze nods, and with a brief yet pointed glance at Feixiao, the healer guides him toward the door.

Even as he tries to hold the petals down, Moze can’t help but feel happy, relieved, that Jiaoqiu is there with him. If this is some sort of sickness, Jiaoqiu will find the cure to it—that’s just the kind of person he is.
