Yesterday I was welcomed back to @ljmuofficial.bsky.social by the legendary @monicamcc.bsky.social to give a lecture and practicals on marine #microplastics. I spent a year of my PhD at #LJMU and it was surreal to be back after 5 years. I’ve missed it so much! Thank you Kostas, Jon and Monica!

Great morning with Sixth Form College giving a lecture and info on what ljmuofficial.bsky.social have to offer. Such a welcoming school and my favourite thing about outreach, getting to engage with students getting ready for the next step of their future into higher education #LJMUoutreach #STEM

The decomposition dynamics of 3 important #kelp species in the Northeast Atlantic with focus on the loss of dissolved carbon. We found that DOC is released in large amounts initially, providing valuable data around the complex processes involved in #carbon cycling of kelps.

Last week I got to speak about #seaweed #aquaculture to the QUB engineers and members of the public during NI Science Week. Always fun to speak to a new audience!

Found some good examples of Fucus serratus #seaweeds being epiphytic on Ascophyllum today while on field work in Strangford Lough. Holdfast attachment looks promising for rope cultivated Fucus in #aquaculture ?!

Today I gave a guest seminar at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) on some #Fucus #seaweed #aquaculture research from the @qubelfastofficial.bsky.social QML/SMAE SeaFEED project. So many interesting questions and ideas for further research. Funded by @wwf.org.uk @daera-ni.gov.uk

Well done Riddhi! So well deserved!
Well done to Riddhi who successfully defended her PhD thesis today. Very proud of her and all her accomplishments. She is an excellent scientist, great mentor to other students and a pleasure to work with in our seaweed research group at QUB.

Some of the serrated wrack (Fucus serratus) biomass cultivated on tiles for the #SeaFEED project at Queen’s University Marine Laboratory. While #Fucus is harder and slower to grow than #kelps, it is much richer in #polyphenols (phlorotannins) which are known for their antimicrobial properties

Just made the transition from Twitter (finally!). I’ll be posting updates on the progress of our various #seaweed #aquaculture projects here from now on. For now here’s an awesome community of epibionts I found living on our local fucoid #macroalgae from Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland
