Ever wonder how ordinary citizens benefit from NSF investments in science and scientists? Check out this blog post from my former AAAS fellow:

NSF staff are tenacious when it comes to the mission.
While the attacks on science at NSF are bigger and grimmer than ever, in the past 24 hours I've gotten two different panel availability inquiries. It's quite heartening to see that the work goes on, with submitted proposals and panels convened.

(Not that I can do two panels in the same month!)

I really do know the most amazing people. First hand account of the protests in LA written by my friend (we were AP chemistry lab partners).
I wrote a piece about the police shooting at journalists at the LA protests, including me, and what it means for a free press. But I want to make it clear that I know that the big story here is not about journalists, it's about what ICE is doing

The President's Budget request as released yesterday will gut scientific research. Why should you care?
1) Science is fundamentally a jobs program. Many 100,000s are employed to do science and work for you, the US taxpayer.

The details of the NSF FY26 budget request were released yesterday. Remember this is the request, and congress makes the appropriation, so if you disagree contact your Senators and representative. www.nsf.gov/about/budget

THIS. The people I work with at NSF believe so much in the mission of NSF that even when the government decides they are no longer needed, they continue to fight to preserve our mission. Today is the 75th anniversary of NSF. Please watch this video.

Thanks to NSF for fostering 75 years of major scientific achievement.
Thanks to NSF and the many civil servants - with expertise in sciences, financials, management, law, policy, and other areas - who have staffed that great agency for 75 years and made America and American science great - for all of us.
Only ignorant and arrogant fools would throw this away.
Tomorrow is NSF's 75th anniversary. 😪

I have such impressive friends doing amazing things.
UCAR has named Christine Wiedinmyer as director of UCAR Community Programs (UCP). With a deep background at UCAR & NSF NCAR, Wiedinmyer's new role will allow her to set strategic direction for UCP & ensure it continues to offer innovative resources, tools, and services to the scientific community.

One of my least favorite things about social media is the way it encourages flat-out meanness, even for people who are not mean by nature. People lose all sense of proportional response. It's war, all the time. To be constantly dehumanizing one other can't be healthy.

It is with deep sadness that I share the passing of my Ph.D. advisor, Jenni Evans. She was an esteemed scientific leader in tropical meteorology & computational science. She shared great strength & inspiration to follow my dreams.

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)
