I just finished the final volume of Phillip Pullman's "The Book of Dust" trilogy: "The Rose Field." This is his continuation of the story of Lyra Silvertongue which began in "His Dark Materials." 1/3

I suppose it was a foregone conclusion that the kid who immersed himself in the works of Vonnegut, Twain, Lennon, Zappa, Heinlein, and Mad Magazine would turn out to be a snarky, caustic, curmudgeonly old man.

But I have to credit the MAGA movement for helping me take it to the next level.

I'm reminded of Trump's claim that he could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and not lose any of his supporters.

December 28th is the anniversary of the tragic Tay Bridge Disaster that claimed 75 lives in Scotland in 1879.

A failure of engineering, inspection, and construction it precipitated another disaster: one of the very worst poems in the history of the English language.

Which is no small feat. 1/3

I say his gently, but…

There’s something unspeakably shameful The United States letting people go hungry.

Not because its government doesn’t fix it —

but because tomorrow a few private Americans could, and never notice the cost.

That’s the part that sits wrong.

I mistakenly thought these signs were meant to encourage other drivers to proceed with extra care to protect the child inside.

Now I understand that it’s a warning to us that the driver has a major source of distraction inside that vehicle, and hasn’t had a decent night’s sleep in months.

On this day long ago, a child was born who, by age 30, would transform the world.

Happy Birthday Isaac Newton

Abandoning civics classes is one of the worst educational decisions of the last century. Example: the battlecry of January 6ers, sovereign citizens, American nationals, the Moors: "I know my rights!" - while acknowledging zero of their responsibilities. As though one isn't reliant on the other.
Yes. They absolutely do need a civics class.
I used to say that these people voted based on what color shirt a politician wore to a debate.

Cause they have no earthly clue what to vote for. So they just wait for these tiny impulses:

"I don't like her shoes, so I don't think she's presidential. I'm voting for him."

They need a civics class.

I don’t know why the DoJ is so reluctant to release the Epstein files.

After all, if they have nothing to hide, they have nothing to fear, right?

If the Trump regime was about governing, this would indeed be a failure.

However, as far as I can see the objective of this administration is grand larceny.

And by that metric, it's succeeding wildly.
As 2025 ends, the pattern is unmistakable. Trump’s second term is unraveling under its own weight. A hollowed-out presidency, factional chaos, and policies that keep backfiring. Step back from the daily noise, and the consequences are impossible to miss.
Backfire
On every major policy question, the Trump regime is failing badly. And voters are taking note.

It's gotten to the point where if I saw a headline that said that an executive order has just been signed that officially changes the name of Florida to Trumplandia, I wouldn't even blink.

I'm actually hesitant to post this because I'd hate to plant the idea in their heads.

On December 16, 1863, George Santayana was born.

But we didn’t learn anything from that, which means he’ll need to be born all over again.

The cultural impact of Rob Reiner cannot be understated. Legend isn't big enough a word. It goes to 11. You can't handle the truth. As you wish. I'll have what she's having. I'm your number one fan. You guys wanna see a dead body? The very idea of a bucket list. The West Wing.

All from his movies.

This is the 25th Anniversary of the Bush v. Gore decision. I was furious at the time, but everything turned out just peachy.

And the Supreme Court never made a ruinous decision that subverts elections ever again…
