There are plenty of stories of models sitting for Euan Uglow who were set in poses of rigid constancy, each feature of their body marked and measured with ruler and plumb-line onto the canvas. 'The Door,' (1968) took 15 sketches and 18 months to complete.

'Marsh landscape.' (1958) In the early 1950s, Denis Wirth Miller settled in the Essex town of Wivenhoe - he considered the ship-building and fishing town a perfect retreat for his work and began to skillfully capture the austere, beautiful Essex flatlands on canvas.

Widely known as a mentor to Edward Hopper, Martin Lewis' hallmark as a printmaker was the use of tonalities to evoke atmosphere and light, his technical bravura shows in this superb watercolour of bi-planes flying over New York City in 1919.

'Coastal Sunset.' (c1970) Kyffin Williams's influences were primarily expressionist and he felt an affinity with Van Gogh, it was not self-aggrandisement but a perpetual fascination, not least that they were both epileptic, that led to him to make comparisons.

‘Carlyle Hotel, Bayswater’ 1982. I wanted to capture the anonymous, transitory nature of this part of London where I lived 1976-1983 when I moved to East London, my home ever since. The painting now lives in the GuildHall Art Gallery and is currently on display.

A #NorthernArt legend, so looking back, not too surprised to find how many times Harold’s works topped over a thousand ‘likes’ at the ‘other place’ …

Among Carl Gaertner’s most admired paintings 'Flying Ponies,' from 1938 is a nocturnal view of a carousel that was installed at a now defunct Euclid Beach Park on the shores of Lake Erie at Cuyahoga County, Ohio in the United States.

'Relics.' (1928) It is interesting to note that was not even a faint American equivalent to the 18thC and early 19thC British and European printmakers, no American Hogarth, no Goya, nothing like James Gillray. This is another work by the superb Martin Lewis.

This work by Richard Carline 'Mount Hermon and Mount Sannin above the Clouds,' (straddling the border between Syria and Lebanon) was painted in 1920 from sketches he made a year earlier while piloting his aircraft during his final weeks as a war artist during WW1.
