Just a heads up to all, I have unpublished "The Choice" (Iamos short story) from Amazon because it is supposed to be free but Amazon has raised the price to $0.99 THREE TIMES over the last two years. It is free on all other retailers, so you can get it on another store or through my newsletter.

"He loves time travel movies. Back to the Future, Bill and Ted, even Star Trek IV. If anyone's going to have an idea, it'll be him." I let out a sigh of relief. Telling Alana had been the right move. If JT could figure something out, maybe I could get out of this nightmare and back to my own time-ideally, without any run-ins with Valerie. And when I got back, I was not going to tempt fate any more. Who cared whether I let Mrs. Rivera's students down? I'd cancel that school visit and get on the road back to Seattle right away. Nice, safe Seattle, with no cornfields and freaky green lightning. I'd hunker down in my apartment and probably never leave it again. This whole thing would be like a bad dream. Surprisingly, I haven't actually used the word "hurt" in JLTFT—surprising because so much of the book is about overcoming the hurts of the past and learning to love yourself and find people who build you up rather than tear you down.

Quietly, Alana got out of the car, coming up to lean against the hood beside me. "Maureen," she said softly. "What's really going on? Please. I want to help you. I want to help you get back to your time, but..." She waved her hands in my general direction. "I also want to help with whatever else is going on. Because it's obvious it's a lot more than just the time travel thing." The tears were flowing freely now. Why did I have to be such a crybaby? I'd never talked to anyone about this. About what had happened to me. Even my parents only knew bits and pieces. I couldn't bring myself to talk about it. Trying to summon the words always just made me feel uncomfortable, made me feel... Ashamed. I couldn't trust anyone. Not after what had happened with Valerie. I couldn't let anyone else in, because what if they turned on me too? Just Like the First Time, Chapter 6: Maureen and Alana chase a thunderstorm in hopes of recreating the magic green lightning, but Maureen's memories of the past come to a head, leading both girls into a dangerous situation. #TimeTravelAuthors 19: Any reference to other time travel works in your story?

Quite a few—like this scene in chapter 4 where Alana and Maureen rely on JT's encyclopedic knowledge of the genre to try to brainstorm an answer to how Maureen traveled back in time.
We wound up staying up until almost three A.M., though only the first hour or two were actually productive—if splitting hairs over whether the Time Turner from Harry Potter was more like Bill and Ted's phone booth or Sam Beckett's Project Accelerator, and whether The Butterfly Effect should be considered a cautionary tale or just a lesson in why Ashton Kutcher should not be allowed near time travel, counted as "productive". I spent the whole time taking frantic notes in a spiral notebook Alana had scrounged from her room and having absolutely no clue what half of them meant. JT had rattled off a bunch of potential "mechanisms," ranging from plausible to completely batshit: the green lightning had opened a rift in the time-space continuum (I'd buy that); a nuclear waste spill on the train tracks (kind of out there, but possible, I guess); even the possibility that someone had modified my Camry without my knowledge to include a flux capacitor (?!). Finally, at half past two, as JT and Alana debated what qualified as a "closed loop" versus "multiverse fuckery, groggily said, "You know what's missing from this list? Magic." JT scoffed. "There's no such thing as magic." "There's no such thing as time travel," Alana protested, "and yet here she is." "Time travel is a scientific principle!" JT insisted. "Just because there's not scientific documentation of it yet"—he leaned heavily on the word, glaring at Alana as she opened her mouth to interrupt—"doesn't mean that it's magic." "But some of these use magic," I said. I held up the cardboard trifold case containing the InuYasha discs. "Like this. And Harry Potter. And 13 Going on 30."

Look, I'm cheating a little on this one because it is post-sized on Mastodon, it's the only occurrence of the word strange(r) in the book, and it makes no sense without the context of all these sentences. And because I like Alana and JT's banter.
He leaned back on the couch, running his thumb over his chin thoughtfully. “I always knew, somehow, that something like this was going to happen to me. That’s why I’ve been preparing all these years, filling my mind with all this knowledge about the fourth dimension.” Alana snorted. “Yes, that’s why.” JT threw a frayed accent pillow at her. “Silence, wench! Even though I'm religious, I try to keep my books secular, apart from characters mentioning their own faith. In JLTFT, things can be explained by magic rather than miracles. That said, there are always coincidences that can't be explained, make of that what you will

#TimeTravelAuthors 11: How do you keep up urgency in your story?

I tend to end chapters on cliffhangers to keep pages turning. This also has the side effect of working well for serialization, which is why I decided to do that for this one. It's how I write anyway, but it works well for that format!
