We think we're so smart these days but some of the best ideas are old. This paper has been a cornerstone for my work, almost 50 years old. If we had listened we would have done everything possible to make development more equitable and reduce vulnerability to hazards.

Taking the naturalness out of natural disasters - Nature
Phil O'Keefe, Ken Westgate and Ben Wisner argue the case that disasters are more a consequence of socio-economic than natural factors.

Great and important article about an imperfect deal on recognizing New Caledonia. Did you know this was happening? Because until I read this, I didn't. Support our newsroom so you can stay in the international know globalvoices.org/donate/
Historic deal recognizes the ‘State of New Caledonia’ within France
"This compromise will not fully satisfy anyone. But I am firmly convinced that it allows us to take New Caledonia out of the spiral of violence, uncertainties, and destruction."

Pourquoi les femmes souffrent davantage des catastrophes naturelles et des migrations
Une double peine pour les femmes ? Plus vulnérables face aux catastrophes naturelles, elles sont aussi plus exposées aux dangers sur les routes de la migration.

🧵 Today I participated in a French 🇫🇷 PhD defence for the first time and it made me reflect on the various examination models: which might be the most scientifically robust, and which might be the most satisfying to the candidate? And is Germany the only place where the entire thing is also marked?

New, from me: The Trump administration is killing Direct File, the free IRS e-filing tool.
Users love it, and it creates incredible value for the public.

It's the clearest sign that DOGE wants a government that serves private and not public interests. 🧵

These days I am regularly asked how to interpret the backlash against climate policies, how did things go that wrong (many reasons ofc), and *are people simply not ready for climate action*

I keep on saying that this last q is a bad one bc it hinges on a wrong interpretation of whats going on.
