No one should have to go to war.

But in the failure case that one does, and especially when that person has to fight both an enemy and systematic prejudice back home, the least we can do is try and remember and honor the full cost of their effort and sacrifice.
Removing a monument honoring Black US soldiers has nothing to do with DEI. It’s erasure of history and it’s straight-up racism.

The trouble with this shut down is that MAGA wants Trump to be kingish and the shut down is allowing him to act like it.

Companies invest where they generate revenue.

If the industry is mature and has low regulation, competitors are likely to be “pricing and packaging” focused.

Sales-led companies generally prioritize marketing budgets over product—and security is usually low on the list to begin with.
Several things here, tbh, but to me the most salient point is the fact that a lot of hyper connected objects have had close to zero design thoughts invested in cybersecurity
Roomba should have been a warning.

I don’t feel like we’re ready for dynamic flocks of independent agentic neural networks with online learning.

Personal devices will carry AI agents with OS-level access in the next few years.

How do we respond when any entity could spontaneously become a malicious god-tier hacker?

🫁❤️New preprint out: The social, decoupled self

We show effects of interpersonal synchronization of physiological rhythms on intrapersonal cardiorespiratory coupling: when we sync our breathing, our breathing–heart rhythms decouple, with a perturbed phase-relationship

The social, decoupled self: interpersonal synchronization of breathing alters intrapersonal cardiorespiratory coupling
People synchronize their periodic behavioural and physiological rhythms with each other during social interaction. While this interpersonal synchronization has largely been associated with positive ef...

Science is so cool
🧠 Tiny motors against Parkinson’s

Scientists built 'nanomotors' that cross the brain barrier, seek out damaged proteins, and stop them clumping. This is a step toward new Parkinson’s treatments.

The Albanian government announced expanding the use of an AI assistant system to control procurement, during a contentious session of parliament last week. Among other comments, the virtual assistant argued that it will be more moral and fair than humans.

Large language models are powerful, but still not trustworthy enough to outsource critical tasks to them. What happens if it invents false facts? If a charge is challenged, can the officer (or defendant) blame the AI?

Lest we forget, these are still relatively fragile demonstrations of a powerful but still unpredictable new technology.
Did you know that LLMs fail at around 70% of all typical office tasks like generating a report on something from a spreadsheet? The Agent Company is a simulated office environment for benchmarking LLMs - I wrote a blog post about the paper here (with links and a rant): jilltxt.net/llms-fail-at...

Occasionally I love ChatGPT. Like when I gave it a research paper I’d written and the itinerary for my planned trip to Australia this November and asked it to look for related art exhibitions…

More public data! Such a cool project
I've just been made aware of the MapYourGrid initiative to map electrical grids around the world, especially in the global south, to provide better data for energy planners.
They have resources teaching you how to map the grid using JOSM and an active discord. Very cool!

Just run across the site yesterday while looking at infrastructure options for a project that I’m working on.

Really nice collection! I found some services that I otherwise don’t think I would’ve come across.

Renewables keep trucking along. You love to see it happen!
Here is an anti-doomism chart in terms of climate action.

Sure, the fossil fools took power over the USA because too many leftists chose to not bother voting to keep the fascists out of power, but they're not going to be able to stop the energy transition nor the fact that EVs are better than ICEVs
