I combine both strategies since I can still use Van as a tank with his skills anyway.
While the other 3 are mostly free to blast the enemy with whatever magic I have.
My final party was Van, Agnés, Risette and Quatre.

Shield Spamming is even better now due to how Shield works now and Risette being the best Shield Setup in the Calvard crew. Plus pure tanking with how Van's Craft set and cores give you plenty of defence (expecially Law Mare). At the end game I was even able to make him also a Crit nuke.

For the people that "I don't want to waste my time with bad stuff" think of playing a bad game like DMC2 as a history lesson on how smth can go wrong.
