If you’re wondering why your friends in academia are a little on edge right now, it’s because an eighteen-year-old who hasn’t done the reading, doesn’t look at the assignment, and has does no critical thinking skills more complex than “because I think it’s in the Bible” can literally end your career

So I have the cover story in next month's TNR.

I interviewed the heads of police groups; immigration defense attorneys, ex-judges and ex-prosecutors; former DOJ and DHS officials, and the former head of Border Patrol.

They're all horrified at what we've seen, and they all fear what's coming.
Trump’s Immigration Nightmare: It Is Happening Here

Absolutely stunning that OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft were able to buy off an entire teachers’ union for just $23 million.
We know students, like the rest of the world, are using AI. Teachers need to be equipped to deal w/all the issues AI creates. Our approach starts with maximizing safety & privacy and empowering educators to make educational decisions, so AI tools can benefit not harm www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-ne...
AI has become the norm for students. Teachers are playing catch-up.
At a New York City training session, educators explored how artificial intelligence could support teaching while also discussing their concerns around the technology.

- no we cant "just ignore" cbs. it is a major, influential media outlet and pretending it doesnt have sway is dumb

- it is important to repeatedly and consistently call this sort of thing out. "everybody" doesnt know or is aware of media rot
CBS paid the president of the United States millions in bribe money and now they censor news reports so it does not annoy him. I don’t know how much plainer we can put this.

I gave a quick "how LLMs work" in methods class and many of my students had their jaws hit the floor. Despite being native to LLMs they've no idea how they actually work. Once they understand it's about probabilities and bullshitting, they tend to realize it's bad for them.
I tell my students explicitly to NOT do this and then I explain why - full of hallucinations, stolen material, mischaracterizations.
What about this is controversial? Beginning an inquiry by using AI to survey material is a very normal and appropriate use.

At least five FUBARed Waymo robots:

Market & Guerrero, SF

One is a problem, two a mistake, five a major ops screw up. Waymo has never fixed their cascading failure problem. Maybe they don't know how.

Fundamentally unfit for service at scale until they do, IMO.

Waymo knows they have this problem and so should their regulators and anyone who has been paying attention.

Professional societies keep beclowning themselves buying into a lie about what an LLM "summary" is. They are inherently counterfeit: not an epistemic product of the ideas in the source, but summary-shaped text linguistically based on *other* works (in the training corpus) that use related language.
This is one of the reasons I remain horrified by seeing @historians.org suggest "ways to use gAI" that included this:
