Pillar 4: What is Open Peer Review?
There is no agreed one definition of Open Peer Review. Generally, models of Open Peer Review revolve in opening one or more of the various aspects or processes involved in Peer Review. Some examples are: Open Identities - Authors and Reviewers are aware of each other identities Open Reports - Review reports are published alongside the relevant article (can be anonymous or open identity) Open Pre-Review Open Manuscripts - Manuscripts are made immediately available. For example, via pre print servers like Archive in advance of any formal peer review procedures. The benefits of Open Peer Review include: Encouraging constructive Peer Review and a wider dialogue. Reviewer comments puts paper in context with the wider field which provides deeper detail for the readers. Reduces bias among the Reviewers as Reviewers are held accountable for their comments. Support Early Career Researchers as published reports can serve as peer review examples for young researchers and ECRs can gain credit for their contributions.
