It takes an estimated 400 repetitions to learn something thru traditional classroom methods but only 10-20 times to learn through “dedicated play” (Purvis). We desperately need more capacity and space for play, choice and creativity in our classrooms (and wider world)

We're in a polycrisis that threatens the conditions that sustain human life and wellbeing.

We must decide, as educational psychologists, not IF, but HOW we will adapt.

Silence is no longer tenable and incrementalism is not sufficient

Interest-based curiosity is the doorway that leads us out of anxiety and into creativity, which helps us to solve problems in practical ways (Beck, 2024)

Culture often pushes us towards deprivation- over interest curiosity, unless our interests conveniently fit the culture. The more we drop our interest curiosity, and pick up deprivation curiosity, the more we’ll unquestioningly support the social hierarchy and ignore its impacts to our natures…

Litman (2005) identified two types of curiosity; the first, ‘deprivation curiosity’ is a worried need to know, stemming from lack of information about how to feel safe (e.g., how to get enough money to survive), and the second ‘interest curiosity,’ comes from the innate sense of wanting to know.

We spend so much time and energy on staying regulated, becoming calm, as if that is the goal. To have just enough calm to cope, just enough energy for performing. Who would we be if calm was a stepping stone we jumped from? Calm not as destination but necessary prerequisite for creativity and play.

Snapshot of our ‘dream’ as part of our anti-discriminatory practice PATH that we did as part of our EP Team Day last week…a very fruitful day and we’re taking our first steps this week. We love a PATH! ✨ #edpsychs

What we call ‘normal’ is a chaotic version of survival mode, and it’s not fun. So taking time to orient ourselves every single day, to retune ourselves to the creative and adventure modes of the game of life. Eurgh, Martha Beck - I love her ❤️

People will not give you what you deserve. They will give you what they’re capable of giving, and their capacity is not a measure of your worth.

Eek! My first podcast appearance 👀 I strongly believe that #edpsychs deserve to enjoy their work.

We spoke about ways to support EPs who may be feeling disillusioned, disconnected and/or isolated.

Really hoping this sprinkles a little positivity and hope for any EPs feeling glum out there 🚀 💖 ✨
🎁One more episode of 'Educated Guess' before Christmas as a festive gift!?

Well here you go! AND our first Educated Guest - fantastic to be joined by @fionacoley.bsky.social to think more about disillusionment in the profession

So you can burn all of your words and live a life of quiet,
Think ‘now I won’t be criticised, now I’m safe from violence’
But you’ll be at the funeral and have nothing to read,
And goodness dies in silence, so I think you should speak. ❤️

One of the many reasons AI can't produce good writing is it can't hate its own writing. It can't think to itself "Maybe I'm illiterate" during the writing process. And that's essential

IFS therapists are encouraged to develop a good relationship between their Self and Self-like parts (often ‘therapist parts’) who inevitably act as an agent of the status quo. In contrast, the Self is an agent of change and healing.
