$The Cosmological Chart of the Kar'cozhan people is pictured to the left. It details the elements of the world. Positive forces on top, negative forces below, elements to the right and left, with reality in the center. Born of Vehemence The people of the city of Kar’cozha believed that the Light and the Void were the fundamental blocks of creation. The conflict of the two forces birthed reality in a great collide. From that collision, they birthed twins- each twin being in conflict with the others’ and birthed forces in kind. This act filled reality with its splendid vibrance. When the vehemence stilled, Hastua came to be. A being whose lively form and chaotic hunger rose from the depths of the void. There it devoured ceaselessly until it grew large enough to breach a surface- what became the Embryonic Sea. There, on a fractured horizon, it gazed to a sky filled with radiance. From spying the skies above, it saw the death of stars, and understood the order of their brilliance. The salt of wisdom was born from its rapturous tears. Those tears filled the sea beneath it, and from those tears came new life who would follow their creator’s path and seek tandem with the two forces. -- Hastua’s Carcass Despite the Kar’cozhan aptitude for memory, there is a blank space in every individual. What exactly was and what became of Hastua. The results were known, for its very corpse shaped the island of which the city is founded. The first funerary mosaic was a temple made from its gleaming bones. What ended Hastua and why remains a mystery, likely one never to be solved since the planet was scoured clean an untold age ago. However, while the world no longer exists, the world was visited numerous times by the Titans’ creations- notorious record keepers, and despite their seemingly ordered existence, have been instrumental agents of change on immeasurable worlds.$ An overview of the Kar'cozhan lifecycle. They are an amphibious race, hatched from eggs adrift at sea. Once hatched, they eat anything they can get their tiny mouths around (including eachother).

Later on, they begin to develop more land based features and head for shore, where an awaiting elder will raise them to the bipedal adult life stage.

The Wheel
The Basis of Runes. Typically, the beginning of any rune will lead towards the center at least once to denote the object’s place in reality.

Conflict in Cosmology (Vertical)
How it all relates to how that energy enters reality. The most obvious example being the conflict of Light and the Void.

Everything in reality started with the conflict of the void and light.

Conflict in Reality (Horizontal)
The way those forces act within reality, such as water snuffing out fire.

Order conflicts with Death in reality, bringing control over death, through ritual and quite literal control (Necromancy) Despite being seen as a dark practice, the art has very little to do with the void in the eyes of the Kar’cozhan people. Rather, magic is conjured through the sphere you pull it from.

Life conflicts with Chaos within reality. It reflects the nature of struggle to continue to perpetuate itself. In relation to the cosmos, Life conflicts with order, it represents stasis, but also the far more understandable patterns in nature. Life and Death conflict, but join together in reality, because one can not fundamentally be without the other. There is no concept of existence if it never existed in the first place.

Each one of the six forces can not bring about existence as we know it if even one of them was absent.

The four elements are the youngest forces, having been split off from reality when it was created, encompassing not only the forces they sit between, but a small slither from every other governing force in reality.

The best examples are water and fire. To the Kar’cozhan people, these forces are primarily attuned to the void, as their people were born in the Embryonic sea. A dark ocean of chaotic, primordial life, spawned from fiery vents. But these also represent how life springs from fire, but also brings death. How water may spring forth life, but brings with it the coldness of death and the order (insight) their people sought by reaching for the surface.

“Overwriting”.

To give someone a shared name is a grave insult in Alrae culture, as it’s essentially seen as overwriting the previous person’s entire existence from the collective memory. Thankfully this was easily avoided by simply changing the sound or providing a new context to the symbol, like many of their words.

For Example:
A’lessandi = Born from the sea, with a belly of fire, gazes the stars for guidance.
And Jussenm’na = From the abyss, scalding blood, seeks the pale suns’ tutelage.

However, the act of overwriting is not a sin. Far from it. Names and their meanings changed hands regularly in Kar’cozhan society. Many Alrae- especially those who worked closer to the void, often crafted additional names and symbols to safeguard themselves from outside forces. It was not uncommon for one person to have multiple crafted names to fit different roles in their day to day lives.

If for any reason an Alrae wished to change their primary name or its meaning, they often would employ the assistance of a chorister to alter the collective memory. After all, signifiers change. What matters is the identity bound to it and how it is to be remembered. This act would strike the original name from the collective, but not the person and who they are. Choristers were specifically trained to change, strike and alter names for the benefit of society- and all therein. The only thing was that the names had to be unique, so not to overwrite the existence of someone else.

Shared names weren’t seen as a problem when it came to interacting with other races. Likely because they rarely encountered enough humanoids with the exact same first and last names to really form an opinion. If they did, they likely would just seek out an additional signifier for the individual to add to the collective, or ask if there are any other names ascribed to the person. (like a middle name, or a title)

Farabu once believed that ‘Junior’ and ‘Senior’ were just surnames on top of surnames.

Name and Spellcrafting:

While the name of an object or person can be made of multiple runes, a spell is typically formed in a continuous line. (After all, breaking the line would break the spell mid-cast. Which, could have disastrous effects)
The only outlier is when casting a spell that affects an individual or individuals- for example, the seal of Hastua. This is because the rune denotes the subject *before* the spell.

These spells often denote a name in of themselves too- the anchoring spell is also the symbol for Hastua and Alrae as a whole. Alrae words and names can often have the same symbol, but entirely different meanings. It is an extremely context sensitive language- as they developed signifiers in the mind long before a verbal language.

They developed a verbal language around the time of the Titan’s Arrival. It was when they likely developed the means to physically speak and sing. When that happened, they continued to use their written language, but created verbal components to try and communicate their reliance on signifiers to those who couldn’t see into their minds’ eye. Every word, every name is a unique sound. Their shared eidetic memory relies on this to recall every, single, individual born of Hastua and those individuals’ experience.

When to use a line, when to use a curve?
It’s a feeling. A line is direct. A curve is a gentle slope. But who is to say a gentle slope can’t have the hidden meaning of lingering violence behind it? The direction of the line’s stroke, the direction of a curve, it all can grant additional context to a symbol.

Every chorister is granted their name from their mentor, or by the council at large. While their primary responsibility is the gathering of words and names through song, they often oversaw other matters pertaining to spiritual well being. The highest of their order was granted the means to inscribe Hastua’s rune into their own to act on its posthumous behalf, and oversee the collective memory directly.

I'llenea's Rune:
Hued of the depths they spawned from. A gentle gaze nurtures and safeguards new life from the waters.

Yelanua's Rune:
Ascended from the depths on gentle ceras. Through the Light’s grace, safeguard our land, custodian of our sea.
Heir of Hastua.

Where modern choristers draw the runes from the collective memory and inscribe through the titans’ granted voices, there was division. Some still held true to the old ways. These dancers inscribed their runes through steps upon amphitheatre floors and cutting the air with blades. It was a rite to rename themselves upon graduation.

Vehemensa's Rune:
Born from turbulent depths.
Frantic blades on the breeze bring devastation.

U'ulenua's Rune:
Wind eventually erodes stone.
All things began from the depths. Cut through the world and return.

When a Kar’cozhan learns a new name, they intuitively ascribe meaning to it, creating a rune in their mind's’ eye. Imprinting a signifier for that person. It represents a bond which grows in potency and depth. When the Kar’cozhan’s name is given in exchange, the connection is made manifest… as can control in the wrong hands.

Cynya's Rune:
Child of the Sun, pulled from death to the Shadows.
Eyes of flame pierce like spears, seeking purpose.

Dynamae's Rune:
Earthmother’s child.
Student of nature’s canon, descended to chaos. Life returns from the forest fire. A potential student again.

Many overlapping lines and symbols crossing over each other in a name may represent that the person who holds it may be an enigma to the viewer of the name, or to the holder of the name itself. Sharp, pointed, striking lines can represent direct, matter of fact brutality, or it could mean quick-thinking attempts at misdirection. Names like this are as challenging to follow as the person who holds it.

Carcer's Rune:
Son of the Tides, Once maintained order, descended to violence. Born and reshaped through the void. A bastion again. By choice? A stone tower erupts from the sea. Placid? Or a storm ready to descend again?

Derrowen's Rune:
Daughter of tides. Seeker of stable truths. Returns to the world. Logic. Stability. Too stable. Rigidity. Flowing to the void. Practical Liar. Obfuscator. What do you seek that requires so many eyes and skins.

Two runes are pictured, showcasing how sloping curves and sudden changes in direction can also lead to complicated runes. They depict Gazrik (belongs to me) and Cletus (Belongs to @kottkrigart)

Conversely, excessive sloping curves may suggest a calm, calculating individual, or an overcautious one who slowly considers every step. A well balanced view of a person may have a mix of straight and curved lines, or a single straight line in a curved name could represent a sudden, potent moment associated with the name, or hesitation. Understandably, names like this can get… hectic.

Gazrik's Rune:
Man of the law, sought freedom on wind and sail. Expected death, eventually, found it. Gunfire! Calculating collection of blood, sustains himself. Sustains others. A strong foundation for a church to vice in the sand.

Cletus' Rune:
Child of light. Preacher. Crawled from the grave. Mourns the light, reaches for a moment. Hesitates. Finds the Shadow. Yearns for more. Back. Forth. Lost on a path. Pulled on a yoke. Wavering. Hopefully settled. Hopefully happy.
