Okay the setup is a bit hacky even for something I farted out in 10 minutes but I still think the ideas are a more elegant solution than the p3 thing of having plot characters do fuck all for 2/3rds of the game or P4/5 party members character arcs revert on a whim cause their slinks are optional
This whole thread I made pondering Pyre and Spiritfarer made me think of a potential game idea (Im likely never gonna make it so feel free to steal it) combining the two. The setup is, you are an angel or similar holy figure tasked with fixing up the limbo between life and afterlife after some
Its funny, even though I was somewhat lukewarm on Pyre, it continues to occupy my thoughts months after playing it. Its less so due to some special memorability it has but more so that playing other games with similar structures, the absence of Pyre's central conceit makes it feel quite...stark?

Finished Transistor. Some neat ideas here and there but overall left me cold. Combat got old kinda fast and the story didnt really spark anything in me. I also kind of hated how dialogue heavy the narration was. The combination of a guy commenting on bloody everything without response (cause red is

Playing Transistor. Its pretty cool so far. I cant help but mourn this era of Supergiant, as someone who didnt like Hades. As hit or miss as they can be, all 4 of their first games feel very fresh and experimental. Hades feels like the relatively most conventional and of course since it got

It should be equally as difficult to buy a parrot or equivalent bird than to get a drivers license. Maybe even some sort of 10k deposit or close relative hostage who is killed if you let it out into the wild to fuck up the ecosystem forever because you didnt quite realize that they are generally

Gotta say, the Resident Evil 4 villagers dont get enough credit for how sporting they are, dutifully yelling out to you when they're behind you and could just, yknow, stab you by surprise.

Started playing Spyro The Dragon 1. So far its quite charming. Also quite a technical achievement, it looks pretty good still, almost contemporary now that early 3D throwbacks are in vogue. Still, the heavy use of LODs to make a seamless-ish 3D stage on PS1 is impressive

LordDarias's review of Cairn | Backloggd
Exhausted. Thats how I feel after finishing Cairn in one single word - exhausted. Fitting, perhaps for a game about mountaineering but I dont think its a feeling necessarily intended by its designers....

Finished Cairn. What a mixed experience. It had that spark that I look for in games, that gets me going in between playing mid, but it just annoyed me in too many ways at the end and especially its narrative ambitions were just 90% flatline for me emotionally. Uggh Idk man. Imma write about it ig

I was about to turn on rewind to get through a stupid scripted setpiece bit in Cairn (absolute nadir of the game) when somehow the rest button caused me to glitch zip across to a big icicle which triggered the cutscene for reaching the end of the section and put me on solid ground. Ill take it!

There is nothing that fucking annoys me more than predetermined set pieces in games; 99% of the time its the most unorganic bullshit ever. Case in point, just reached one of those in Cairn and its the dumbest part of the game so far. "Fuck you, you cant plant pitons for this section only, also

Cairn has some aggressive ass LODs and low texture pop ins (mipmaps probably) and is a fairly stylized, not super high fidelity fancy effects game, so unless theyre mining crypto in the background I dont understand how it can reliably stutter and drop frames on my 5070Ti rig?

'Designers who modded their own games' a list of games by LordDarias | Backloggd
Usually when a designer wants to revisit an old classic the opportunity exists to make a remasterremake or even just an official patch if its a modern game sold digitally Sometimes thats not possible ...

Its been a while since Ive loved and hated a game quite as much as Cairn - he said after losing 30 mins to the biggest load of bullshit ever

Dunno how they manage it, but I end every session of Cairn feeling exhausted by the physical effort even though Im just pressing buttons with my fat ass sat on a comfy chair. Incredibly immersive and intense. Sometimes frustrating admittedly, I was a bit thrown off about having a very important

Been doing some playtesting for Moves of the Diamond Hand (its supposed to go into early access this year) and I must say its shaping up to be a real gem. Takes the dice mechanics from Betrayal at Club Low as a base and expands it into a lovely little "1 city block RPG" set in the weird, funny

You ever thing about how shit cutlery was before stainless steel? Prior to 1913 unless you were a rich fuck who could afford silver or gold implements, you had to not just wash your utensils but also make sure to keep them dry and polished so they wouldnt rust. We take em for granted but theyr great

In retrospect, the bethesda/obsidian rpgs have that weird half measure in terms of creating NPCs with "rich lives" outside the player by having their own schedules, but seemingly never acknowledging any of it in conversation. I can't recall the blacksmith ever going "fine but make it quick I need to

he settles it forever: "retro" refers to a specific time period which was defined in the ps3 era. the bar for what is considered "retro" does not move forward as time passes. it's comparable to "modernist" literature, the name being temporal doesn't mean it changes over time, it's just a name.
