I thought I was protecting myself from grief by drinking through it. But I wasn't protecting myself—I was blocking out the love.

Grief is just love with nowhere to go. And in sobriety, I finally let myself feel both.

Plot twist: Being honest about my 14 years of sobriety made me look riskier on my life insurance exam than lying about drinking ever did.

The irony? The very risk they're worried about is exactly what keeps me safe.
