Glaciologist at University of Bristol, loves ice, meltwater, dirt, microbes and inventing new ways to measure them
I've got a sensor measuring a titchy stream near Monmouth to support one of our citizen science groups. It's usually 20-30 cm deep, but went up to >2m in just a few hours during Storm Claudia! Thinking of everyone affected.

As the United Nations marks the 2025 International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation and the opening of COP30 in Brazil, I'm happy to have been able to contribute a chapter to a new UK National Commission for UNESCO report on "Glaciers and Ice Sheets in a Warming World: Impacts and Outcomes". (1/2)

Team SLIDE also features in this report. TL;DR: glaciers are changing fast, but they're not gone yet, and UK scientists are helping find out about it
Will our mountains lose their snow and ice?

And does it matter if they do?

These questions are answered by BAS glaciologist Dr Hamish Pritchard in a major new UNESCO report for the UN International Year of Glaciers' Preservation.

Finally out! The outcome of a virtual workshop in Feb 2024 with modelers and observationalists to put together data and protocols to include historical changes in ice sheet/ice shelf discharge in CMIP models. Hopefully not too late for some CMIP7 runs!

Datasets and protocols for including anomalous freshwater from melting ice sheets in climate simulations
Abstract. Anomalous freshwater fluxes from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets and ice shelves are impacting the surrounding oceans, and we need to be able to account for these effects in climate m...
