The Yellow-eared Toucanet is an elusive bird. Tiny, shy, and spending most of its time in the canopy, many birders go years and never see this bird.
But this male has been visiting @tapirvalley.bsky.social and is so relaxed, he's been making adorable little calls after he has some bananas.

Krill leaping to get out of the way of a lunge feeding humpback whale. There are about 86 species of krill and they are a keystone species for the Antarctic ecosystem, providing food for marine mammals and seabirds. They also play a critical role sequestering carbon in the Southern Ocean. #Crustmas

It is very similar in size to the Milky Way and is 100 million light-years away. Its strikingly curved spiral arm is due to gravitational interaction with a nearby galaxy, NGC 770 (outside the image, top right). In the background, we can see a multitude of even more distant galaxies
