Pro #Writing Tip: if you want to improve your dialogue, use subtext. People love submarines. Their hard exterior, cozy inside, their gauges, that little telescope thing.

Speak about subs!

Wisdom nuggets heard this week at the writers con:

-Producers want to connect with YOU
-Rewrite for the one producer who makes the decision
-After handing over a final script, it's a collaborative project
-The movie will never be what it is in your head
-Enjoy the process of writing

Every scene in your screenplay should be compelling in its own right.

Ask yourself why anyone would find this scene interesting to watch. Why is it fun? Or compelling?

Have an actual answer.

Few things are more boring than a scene that only exists to get to the next scene.

Great advice. I adore precise verbs. And yeah, emotion over info every time.
Five quick ways to improve your screenwriting.

1. Let precise verbs do heavy lifting.
2. Shorter paragraphs.
3. Time to read = time it takes to happen on screen.
4. Be specific. Non-choices kill.
5. Emotion > Information.

Focus on this, and you're ahead of 90% of other writers.

Excited that my short script "84" advanced in the Vail Film Festival, thus landing it on Coverfly's Red List. (Zookeeper's Daughter and Unpredictable advanced also, but today I'm rooting for the underdog.)

Since we're on the process of screenwriting processes:
1. Concept
2. Collect cool stuff related to concept. Words, images, research, snippets of dialogue
3. Rough idea of characters
4. Emotional beat sheet
5. Outline
6. First draft
7. More of steps 1-5
8. Rewrites + many notes.
#ScriptSky
This is pretty much where I’ve landed as well.

1. Notes
2. Super loose outline
3. Treatment
4. 1st draft
5. Rewrites
After screenwriting for 28 years, I have settled on this process:

1. Pre-Outline
2. Outline.
3. Treatment
4. Screenplay
5. Rewrites

I have found this the quickest route to a polished draft.

It leaves room for discovery in (3) and (4), with the shortest time in (5).

Question for all you #ScriptSky people. I just got notified that The Zookeeper's Daughter is in the Top 20 scripts for TV Drama on Coverfly. (Not for the month or year, but apparently overall). It seems like a big deal to me—but does this mean *anything* to execs, managers or producers?

Excited to see both THE ZOOKEEPER'S DAUGHTER and UNPREDICTABLE are semifinalists's in the 2025 ScreenCraft TV Pilot Script Competition. Both scripts are also in top 1% on @coverfly.bsky.social. Congrats to all! @screencraft.bsky.social screencraft.org/blog/2025-sc... #ScriptSky

Thanks for this thread. It's such a big problem—white men not able to put themselves in the roles of characters who don't look like them. How can you possibly have empathy if you can't do that? Stories are life.
Been thinking about this a lot, particularly how the right-wing bludgeon of “woke” is rooted in the increase in stories that don’t centre white boys. A disturbing amount of political discourse stems from man-babies being unable to empathise with stories led by people who don’t look like them.
Apropos of nothing in particular, stories do have great power and importance and we shouldn’t ever forget or underestimate that.
