Bell: Is afraid of being alone. They fear it more than death, more than anything else. They need others in their life.

Key: Is afraid of losing Bell. They're his Person and he couldn't imagine life without them, especially after over 70 years of friendship.

Tae: Is afraid of failure.

From Iron Spirit: this is our first look at Cyrano and Phaedra. (Well, second look for Cyrano, technically.) Cyrano has an arm made of water. The first time Kelly sees him, he's not wielding it, but he is when they meet again, and this is her first time seeing such magic.
Something bites back a noise, something else screams. The tendril of water around Ken’s neck snaps back as two figures flicker into view, the water spreading over one of them like a film for a moment before twisting and swirling back into the general shape of an arm. The man who bears it levels a grave stare at them, but the woman on her knees beside him does not share his fury. In fact, she looks terrified. She’s not on her knees at all, Kelly realizes, but is resting on the powerful, tawny haunches of a big cat, tufted tail sweeping behind her as her eyes whirl between them. Chestnut brown hair frames her face like a mane, and the only form of clothing she wears is a modest scrap of fabric that covers her breasts, cinched around her waist with a golden belt. And jewelry, so much jewelry: Necklaces upon necklaces, earrings and cuffs, bracelets all up her arms. She is drenched in gold and jewels. The man beside her is beautiful, so much so he could put many fabled women to shame. His hair is long and ink-black, tied in a mix of braids and strands that are pulled into a ponytail. His skin has the faintest tan to it, barely noticeable in the light of the fire Haruka now brandishes. The water flows in a constant current from the scarred end of his shoulder. Kelly grits her teeth as recognition dawns on her and she notices the smell of saltwater again. No one. “That’s who I saw in the woods!” Kelly shouts, lifting her rifle to take aim at him again.

After dealing with a lot of Complicated Feelings, a major emotional and energetic downswing, and some other stuff, I finally started into the next round of edits and revisions for BYMMS tonight. Here's hoping I can keep the momentum going and continue tomorrow, and the day after, etc.

Off the top of my head, I enjoy the opening of basically anything I've read of Seanan McGuire/Mira Grant. Unbreakable by Mira Grant had a good opening and was the first thing I thought of for this question.

I also loved the opening of The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker. ♥

Yes, I'll keep reading anyway. I have a hard time DNFing books early, I usually have to make it at least halfway through before I'll consider it. I have a hard time DNFing books in general, but I'm trying to be more willing to, because I have SO many books to read and not enough time.

I don't think I really have any particular types of openings/beginnings I like or dislike, to be honest. I'm pretty open to trying any of them! However the book opens, the author must've had a reason for doing it that way, right? I'm along for the ride either way.

I think I got them all. My dad was military and then I moved around a lot after I left home due to one circumstance or another.

I finished my first "nice" piece of art for the year, but I'm going to sit on it and revisit it tomorrow to see if there is anything I want to touch up or add. I'm pretty happy with it, though.
