Expertise, research, and knowledge. How refreshing.
🧵Day 3 and we have a new meaning for "running Venezuela," courtesy of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the nation's top diplomat, who is in charge of Venezuela as well as the National Archives. We're going to insist they do what's in the US national interest. Time for some principal-agent theory. 1/

Immigrants are America. Value everyone who has come here and shared their food and culture and dreams and energy in our incredible melting pot of a country. Wishing you a new year that is happier than the current one. Fin.

She tweaked the recipe and now hers is the one we will use going forward. Like all American families, we are descendants of people from many countries—Wales, Syria, England, Italy, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Israel/Palestine. 3/4

My aunt, the daughter of Syrian immigrants, married into our Welsh-American family and took up the mantle of baking the cookies. As she got older, her lesbian daughter-in-law, who is Italian-American, baked with her to learn the technique (rolling out the dough, baking on a griddle). 2/4

This is a story about Welsh cookies with the not-very-original theme that we are all immigrants. My Great Aunt Bessie, the daughter of immigrants, made delicious Welsh cookies (or Welsh cakes, to some). 1/4

This is a better link than the last one.
A cool thing about "The House I Live In" is that its lyrics were written by Abel Meeropol, best known for (a) writing the lyrics for the anti-lynching song "Strange Fruit," recorded by Billie Holiday, and (b) adopting Julius and Ethel Rosenberg's orphaned sons.

In London a time comes every day where the ghosts get their own back. It's often subtle but always undeniable, and it's strongest in autumn & winter.

If you're ever at loose ends on Christmas Eve, pay respects at St Michael's Cornhill. Because here, down the alley, was Scrooge's counting house.
