Crazy to have worked this Valentine’s Day because two years ago to the date I was un-laid off from the LA Times.

Long, confusing story but so happy that I’ve been able to stay on and tell California’s most important wildlife stories!

Bittersweet update: Time is of the essence for the wolf that recently visited LA County to find a mate. Wolves are only fertile around Valentine's Day, and she’s been looking for love.

Now she's in Kern County, likely because she came up empty down south. bit.ly/462RyrO

California's last known grizzly was spotted in Sequoia National Park -- pretty far south -- about 100 years ago. And they certainly roamed the mountains of LA County.
This is an incredible story, and a reminder of what we lost (or rather killed off and drove away). There are 19th Century accounts of the canyons above Malibu being lousy with grizzly bears.
