Work as an English professor in Chicago, interested in urban studies, Irish studies. In my mind I'm always still in Kilkenny. Mainly post about Deadwood and lefty political stuff, hurling and pictures of my dogs

The New York Times is less significant than you think.
we can chalk it up to youth and inexperience but the biggest mistake the mamdani campaign made was winning by 8.8% and not 1.5%, which is the margin needed for the media to say it’s a total mandate

Cuomo was always a real shitbag so it's good to see him just completely give in to it in the dying moments of his public life
So here's Andrew Cuomo reacting to Maria Bartiromo wondering if Mamdani will "change the look of New York" and have Muslim women "completely covered up," telling her that Mamdani "doesn't understand New York culture" because he has "dual citizenship" and "he's a citizen of Uganda."

But I was told young men are all fascists and the only way to appeal to them is by going to the right and also inventing a center Joe Rogan in an expensive lab. I wonder what kind of lesson there is for the Democrats in all this?
85% of young men support Zohran Mamdani.
79% of young women support Zohran Mamdani.
67% of Jewish people aged 18-44 support Zohran Mamdani.
65% of Black people aged 18-44 support Zohran Mamdani.

Would you have guessed *any* of that with how the media has covered all this?

Kai's essay on Satin Island and enactive cognition in this collection is very innovative and helpful for thinking about how we read urban space through literature

This is, basically, the whole ball game on this subject
i just find this so bizarre. searching through texts and doing the reading for myself is how i actually think through ideas! trying to put together a sentence is how i figure out what i actually want to say!

I'm teaching this fantastic book by @tadethompson.bsky.social on a science fiction course right now but I keep getting the sneaking suspicion that he's a #deadwood fan, partly because of how he depicts the evolution of the city, but also because of some little details...

I've always wondered do newspapers in other countries do sports-style analysis articles about the school exams the way they do for the Leaving Cert in Ireland? The Irish Examiner has a whole section on it.

When Nick Mullen heard WTF was still running a few years ago he said "if I'm still doing a podcast after that long, I'll kill myself... ... .... Hell I'll kill myself even if I don't do a podcast for that long!"
Marc Maron says in the latest episode of WTF that he's ending the podcast sometime later this year. www.wtfpod.com
