And don’t miss this super cool website that @ronyhirsch.bsky.social created for you to be able to explore the data yourself!
What did we find? Enough to build a website so people can explore the data! (ronyhirsch.github.io/minds-matter) To our question: despite a clear relationship between the two, consciousness doesn't seem to be perceived as necessary for moral status. And it doesn't appear to be sufficient either. 5/n

Another beautiful work from @ronyhirsch.bsky.social , now with @niccolonegro.bsky.social : they find that contrary to may philosophical stands, public views do not consider consciousness to be neither necessary nor sufficient for moral status! Find this, and many other interesting results, below 👇

Consciousness seems central to moral status debates, from AI to animal welfare.
But is consciousness necessary for moral status? Is it sufficient?
We surveyed >1000 people to find out. 🧵 1/n

We delve into 37 studies that examined NCCs at the level of populations of neurons and single neurons in humans. 🤓 Most used the contrastive approach, where neural activity is compared between trials where the same stimulus is consciously perceived or not (we discuss limitations of this approach).

Read this to see why we don’t think P and A are two *types* of C, but two conditions for C. And why we think this can truly advance the field and solve controversies. Open access until Feb 5th:

Very proud of this great piece of multi-lab work by Kabir & Husta, et al.

Want to measure attention across the visual field (without interfering with ongoing perceptual/attentional processes)? Use RIFT!

Here we share our how-to-RIFT knowledge, including analysis code, quantitative comparisons, ..
Planning on running a RIFT study? In a new manuscript, we put together the RIFT know-how accumulated over the years by multiple labs (@lindadrijvers.bsky.social, @schota.bsky.social, @eelkespaak.bsky.social, with Cecília Hustá and others).

I was once told: "never try EEG+fMRI!"

It was sound advice... but we did it anyway!

Thrilled to share our first preprint, where we explore the neural signatures of mind blanking, linking the sleep-like slow waves seen in #EEG to patterns of hyperconnectivity in #fMRI.

1/3 How do you correct for multiple comparisons? Do you take into account *all* comparisons that can render the paper publishable? Most of us don’t. In this NHB piece, Yoav Benjamini, Yoav Zeevi and I argue that it’s time to change our practices >>

Very glad to see this paper out, beautiful work by the great @francoisstock.bsky.social , @nfaivre.bsky.social , Michael Periera et al. It’s been a pleasure to play a (very small :-)) part in this project 🙏
Our #sEEG study is now published in Nature Communications: rdcu.be/eIkoG! 🧠
Key finding: We discovered neural evidence accumulation for visual perception that's independent of report preparation—recorded from >3000 channels across 3 experiments!
