Congrats to lead authors @alexattinger.bsky.social and Tony Drinnenberg and all our amazing collaborators! Check out the thread below for new work from the lab on plasticity, cortex and spatial representations for navigation!
How does the brain balance learning new things without overwriting what it already knows? Our new paper tackles this long-standing stability–plasticity dilemma during active navigation. With Tony Drinnenberg from the Deisseroth Lab (@deisseroth.bsky.social)

Environmental Novelty Modulates Rapid Cortical Plasticity During Navigation
In novel environments, animals quickly learn to navigate, and position-correlated spatial representations rapidly emerge in both the retrosplenial cortex (RSC) and primary visual cortex (V1). However,...

Differential kinematic coding in sensorimotor striatum across behavioral domains reflects different contributions to movement - Nature Neuroscience
Hardcastle and Marshall et al. show that striatal function is domain specific, required for task-related but not spontaneously expressed movements. This functional distinction is reflected in starkly ...

It's officially published!! In my main postdoc work with @markplitt.bsky.social and @lgiocomo.bsky.social, we found that the hippocampus simultaneously encodes an animal's spatial position and its experience relative to reward in parallel population codes. 🧵

New paper from the lab officially out! Congratulations @marisosa.bsky.social - amazing work - and just before she sets off to UC Boulder to start her own lab!
How does the brain map where rewards are found?
Stanford researchers Lisa Giocomo and Mari Sosa found that mice form adaptable hippocampal maps that track reward locations, offering insight into how memory, dementia & addiction relate to place and reward.

Early morning run on the High Line ❤️
New lab alert!! Mari is an incredibly creative and awesome scientist - plus an amazing mentor! If you have the opportunity to join her lab - I can’t recommend it enough - can’t wait to see her get started ❤️
Exciting news!! I’m joining the tenure-track faculty at University of Colorado Boulder this fall as an Assistant Professor of Psychology & Neuroscience!
The Sosa Lab will study how memory is shaped by cognitive and physiological demands, including during pregnancy and the postpartum period. 🧵
