Our IFS report on air pollution is out! Good news first: air pollution (PM2.5) has HALVED in England since 2003, with a big drop during Covid. There's no rebound post Covid, somewhat puzzlingly. We use DEFRA data, monitoring station data shows the same thing. (1/7)

CSWEP strongly condemns Larry Summers’ behavior as revealed in the email correspondence with the late Jeffrey Epstein. While abuse of power in the economics profession is not new, rarely has the intent behind such abuse been so clearly stated.

What if America lifts sanctions on Russia but Europe does not? Access to US tech, currency and payment networks, some say, is what Russia really wants. But the old continent has its own weapons. Ignored and threatened, it may be tempted to use them www.economist.com/finance-and-...

Actually @therestpolitics.bsky.social, make that a topic of your conversation please: why is it so hard to make people outside of UK Higher Education see how dire and dangerous the structurally failing sector is? Local economies about to sink; R&D all but stagnated; education blandified.
Genuine question: how do we break through this? Some journalists are waking up but seeming can’t reach these parents (you’d think they’d be our most interested audience…)

Is it really all trying to get @therestpolitics.bsky.social to cover the structural issues with #UKHE? #SaveHE
Spoke to quite a few parents of uni-age young ppl yesterday. They were all asking me like 'what the hell's going on in HE' and e.g. 'where's my kid's tutor gone'. I explained a series of times. No-one had heard anything about the university crisis. (1/2)

With electrification so central to net-zero & delivering 60% of emissions cuts by 2040, top CCC recommendation is to make electricity prices cheaper

(Weirdly, most news coverage focused on low-carbon choices eg diet, despite the much greater role for other solutions)

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold.

We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940.

2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

French cities with higher supply elasticity see lower price growth. This variation in supply elasticity is explained by variation in the restrictiveness of local land-use regulations.
