I'm about to release the first version of a 2D stealth game that I've been working on for around five months...

...or 7 years if I look at it from a different perspective. 🧵

I wrote a devlog where I dive deep on some game design changes I'm going to release (hopefully) soon, plus an explanation about why kills are now so bloody.

Read it here: leoqb.itch.io/nightcrawler...

The annual ritual of getting @apwot.bsky.social new issue has been performed. I got the 1-3 slipcase in the previous campaign, glad to see now there's also the 4-6 one

Thanks @cazwis.bsky.social for making this happen every year!

Modern AAA games all have a problem: if you don't play them for a while you'll never remember all the controls. I wanted to play again RDR2 and I won't because of how intricate the controls are. And it's not like I can just redo the tutorial, since it's spread over a few hours. 🧵

I have 4 super-simple tutorial levels and I'm thinking of switching to just 1 complex tutorial level (still linear and with instructions).

Do you think it's better multiple simple tutorial levels or 1 big one?

I worry to cognitively overload the player right away

Always fun to fool around in a test scene.

That repeated off-screen kill with everyone catching up to kill me once I was already dead made me laugh, like was that really necessary

From the next update I'll add KO and change the overall level objective, this will unlock new potential playstyles:

Normal, Assassin, Pacifist, Ghost.

This comes with an interesting game design question and I would need your input 🧵

1/7

Now levels in my stealth game can be completed with these different playstyles

I wonder if Ghost should be it's own separate thing or if it should be added on top of the others. eg:

Ghost, Assassin, Pacifist

vs

Assassin, Ghost Assassin, Pacifist, Ghost Pacifist

wdyt?

I'm testing some big changes to the core gameplay of my game.

Instead of having to kill everyone, you have to kill just 1 target. The guards can be stunned, killed or ignored.

This would have a lot of interesting implications in the game 🧵

The conundrum: polish an update until it reflects what's on your mind or release it as soon as the gameplay changes are playable (and polish it later).

Today some complete stranger decided to buy my game (which is available for free). Besides some friends supporting me, this is the first time someone I don't know buys this game. It was so unexpected and felt so good tbh, just a selfless act of support.

Adding knock-out before a kill. I wanted to make it abundantly clear when you kill the enemy. Is it a bit too much? 😬

Sometimes the best game design tool is just a blank canvas. A few times I got stuck in Godot only to understand that I needed to make a step back and clarify my thoughts on figjam

Well now I have a clearer idea on what to include in the next update, devlog coming soon

Tonight’s I finally have some time to test some mechanics I want to add to the next update. And also to make up my mind about what should be in the next update 🫨

I was searching for a feature and I found both a issue that requested it and a PR that implemented it

I think these advantages of using an open source engine are overlooked. You can just see by yourself if something has been added, instead than trying to find some info about it

Finally took the time to convert the project to Godot 4.5, it was a very smooth process luckily and nothing really broke. I still need to do some kind of regression testing, but from the looks of it everything looks alright.

I stitched together some gifs I made for the game...I think it does give a good idea of the gameplay!

As a solo dev it takes time to create these things to show the game to others, but it's cool when the result is fun to watch.

Does anyone know some good sources to get cool royalty free music? It could be either free or paid, as long as it doesn't have super expensive upfront costs.

So the game has been out for already a week and hundreds of people have played it, its humbling

Up until now I had this big goal of reaching a release and there were so many things to do that it was always obvious what the next step would have been, but now..🧵

Just came back from Talk & Play 52, hosted by @berlingamescene.bsky.social

So many people played Nightcrawler tonight, I got a ton of positive feedbacks. A few people told me they found it addictive, they couldn't stop playing. That's honestly so nice to hear.

Some people asked me to elaborate the history of this game after my previous thread on how this idea has been"7 years in the making"

I decided to write a devlog about it, here my favorite highlight from it!

I just pushed v0.1.1 with some fixes and changes from player feedback.

I changed the level order: the first levels were too difficult. I made the tutorial clearer and I added a visual outline to an enemy in kill range

I'm thinking of adding a red outline to the enemies when they are in backstab range, same way I use a yellow outline for objects.

During some playtesting I noticed that players tend to not always understand if they are in range, especially when they are approaching a walking enemy.

Wdyt?
