I’ve finished my first semester in Baruch College’s MA Arts Administration program. I got two As and a B+. Even with 17 years away from a classroom, adjusting to classes where I read the Harvard Business Review and had to define promissory estoppel, I felt fearless. More to come this fall.
I’ve had smooth, on-time rides with the new R211A trains on the G. And I particularly love the very detailed digital displays over the doors with bus and subway transfers, street exits, stairs and elevators. Right down to which car you’re on.

Performed with an excellent lineup on How Was It? at QED hosted by Matt Storrs last night. Wonderful to perform a brand new 10 minute story about something I’ve been living through the past few months. How Was It? goes up the 1st and 3rd Saturdays every month at QED.

#FridayReads: I’ve loved Ta-Nehisi Coates’s work for years. The Message, particularly the chapter on his trip to Palestine in summer 2023, is an impactful read. In that chapter Coates documents the degrading day-to-day experience of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza under Israel’s occupation.

Through 11/26 the MTA is taking public comments on the new 19 stop Interborough Express train connecting Jackson Heights, Queens to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn using already existing rails. I let them know I am overwhelmingly in support yet that I hope they can make it heavy rail instead of a “light metro.”

Self-driving Waymo cars are currently being tested on Manhattan streets. I saw one the other day. They still have human drivers behind the wheel during the test period. Personally, I’ll still be getting around town on the subway and the bus.

Last night at The @astoriabookshop.bsky.social Storytelling Show we heard about court watching against ICE, 3 strokes in a row, a car horn not stopping, a friend taking their own life, a full circle song moment, confronting a bully, therapeutic ukulele, moving in then breaking up. Next show 12/4.

A story I’ve been thinking of in the final days of the MetroCard: In the early 1980s there was a scandal about a new 17.5 cent Connecticut Turnpike token that was the exact same size as a 75 cent NYC Subway token. It made for one of the most inventive feats of fare evasion in NYC Subway history.
