Today’s poem is called ‘First Date’.
First Date    We’d so much in common, that was clear from the start:  a marriage of souls, like de Beauvoir and Sartre.  The connection was instant, almost irrational:  simply simpatico, fully compatible.    You confessed you loved winter, north Yorkshire, and cats.  ‘Me, too!’ I responded. ‘How amazing is that?’   You were wild about Wharton: you loved Ethan Frome.  ‘His best,’ I said, thinking I’d read him when home.     You praised a revival of Pinter’s Dumb Waiter.  I nodded along. I should google that later.  The discussion then turned to things that you hated:  Pulp Fiction, you thought, was quite over-rated.    ‘You make some good points,’ I eventually said.  I could always hide that poster under my bed.   You spoke of a loathing of poetry that rhymed  and I said yes,  that stuff’s awful.  Brian Bilston

I'm starting a new book today. That blank page never stops being daunting no matter how many times I do this. The fact that it will become an 80,000 word novel seems quite impossible right now, but as my character would say, "chin up, tits out, let's do this."

She’d Dance   She’d dance like no one was watching although she liked to think he was. The kitchen was her grand ballroom; her partner was a mop.   She’d foxtrot among the pots and pans, she’d paso doble to the sink, and as she swept across the floor, her mind danced, too. She’d think   of how he’d held her in his arms at the Locarno and the Ritz - whirling, waltzing, a world apart - in the years before the kids,   and longer still before the shadow the doctor spotted on his lungs. How dazzlingly they had danced! How dizzyingly she had spun!   Her neighbours saw her sometimes, shuffling bent-backed to the shops. - Setting word targets
- Getting outside and exercising
- Absorbing all sorts of art
- Remembering why I started.
