📚🇳🇿 I really enjoy all of Miriam Toews’ books. She often explores themes of mental health, Mennonite experiences, and family, both given and chosen. She also manages to be funny and serious without sacrificing either! Women Talking is quite different but v important. An author I’ll always read!

🇳🇿📚 Just finished this very good memoir. Young writer who interviews her dad, a rural GP. But it’s more than that and hopeful despite content.

📚🇳🇿 First book finished of 2024. Exceptional. Beautifully written with compassion and “lightness” despite heavy historical context. Highly recommend.

Today in Tāmaki, an Israel supporter crashed a peaceful demonstration in support of Palestine. He grabbed a flag off a protestor, threw the flag away and then used the metal pole to attack my friend in the face. Police dogs were trying to track him down tonight. Please share these photos of him.

“So much violence and lack waiting on the other end of the violence and lack that people poured out of the South to escape, and still they kept believing there was someplace in this country where they could be Black and be safe and make a home.”

Nicole writes so well and with brilliant insight in this important piece on why schools insist on teaching the same books decade after decade, and why that needs to change thespinoff.co.nz/books/25-10-...

Christchurch! Please email your local councillor to let them know how much our small community libraries are valued. They are not, as our mayor describes them, “just a building with some books in it.” The council is considering closing small libraries to cut costs. Please share.

📚🇳🇿 Also started this excellent book of short stories. I love having a book of ss or essays on the go so I can feel like I’ve achieved something by finishing one a day 🤣

Time for a fun, queer romp. I wanted something easy to read but I love it when “easy to read” also equates to heartfelt and genuine.

Finished this recently and feel conflicted. Some parts were so well written and smart and other parts felt contrived. It also should be marketed as a horror imho. Anyone else read it?

Finished this yesterday and loved it. Each book in this series has improved on the last and this has a compulsive plot and also genuine characters. Definitely heartbreaking too, proceed with caution.

Highly recommend donating blood or plasma so you can get free biscuits and KitKats and get immersed in a new book! This is the first J.P Pomare I’ve read.
