A toning hummed. Sang. Enchanting, luminous, it echoed through the mirror land of trees and sky. It was in everything, and all of nature resonated with it. Ayina and Greta harmonized with it. It was inside Niwa, too. She was singing it. Every cell of hers healed while gliding and resonating. Dreamtime fully merged with reality. Was she awake? In spirit? She felt the boat cradling her through patches of duckweed, reeds, and the liquid sky below, leaving ripples behind.

As Cass, Anya, and Ferran stepped into the room, all of their eyes were drawn to the center of the far wall, where a tall and heavy metal case sat ajar, all the locks that had been sealing it now rendered useless, cut off and thrown aside. It had been all but emptied of its precious contents – a glass bottle that had only dregs in it, broken glass where another must have fallen at some point, the thick and precious liquid having spilled out – and in the center of it, a note made from thin paper and torn off one of the trader's stray notebooks. Cass stepped forward to read it, her hands beginning to shake with a barely repressed rage as she read the familiar scrawl, written out hastily with a charcoal pencil: 'A little too late'

The odd reality of henching.
“Oh, this is going to be like telling a child Santa isn’t real,” He was real, but Mr. Schadenfreude took glee out of telling children he wasn’t. “Henches were a real thing for some years before things started to change in the Outlaw society. Henchmen took a lot of risks for very little rewards, until the henchmen learned about liberal ideas like worker’s rights and protections. They formed a union that lasted against the threats of greater outlaws, mostly because they lost their power and bluster without their armies. Henches earned their right to choose their jobs. After some time, they formed into mercenary companies that offered up the outlaws a variety of services from bodies for a job to specialized services with hackers and even assassins. “A person went into the companies with no skills and could come out with a collection of handy talents they have to pick up over the years of work. Most of the skilled assassins began as some snot-nosed hench in a cat costume or something of the like. The organization also allowed for the burgeoning mastermind to get a real start. One is allowed to rent-a-hench for a sizable portion of the heist, but you had to pay for all the ones you got, not just the ones that survived. Killing too many henches can get you blackballed from the companies.”

“Are you still writing?”  A little off topic but, hey, she’s the professional I guess. “Every day. What’s that saying about tortured poets or artists or whatever? The more it hurts, the more I write.” “About what?” “Oh, um, nothing. Everything. I don’t know. I write some poems mostly, short bursts of feelings I guess. I’ve been trying to write a book, actually.  About two people over thirty-five who decide to have a kid together. It gets me out of my head a bit, though I’m not sure it’s really any good.” “There’s an old adage, isn’t there? Write what you know?” I stare blankly at her. “This, Bianca. SPOILER All of it. This is your story. This is what you know. It’s beautiful. It’s tragic. It’s real. This is your story, you just have to write it.” “I don’t know if I can.  What if writing it all down, reliving all of it, what if it’s too much?” “What if it’s exactly what you need to set you free? To get it onto paper, out of you? What if this is the way you learn to forgive yourself? By honoring SPOILER?” And, just like that, I realize that, sometimes, the what-ifs in life come along to show us the way. Sometimes, they can save us.

Which meant that he could not show any weakness. Any fear. Even though she scared the hell out of him. Unlike many of his colleagues, he didn’t shy away from fear. Fear kept you sharp. Fear kept you alive. And he was a man who believed in using every tool in his arsenal. He stepped into a small room with only two chairs and a table between them. Made from indestructible Duralex and attached to the floor. Nothing that could be used a weapon. Except her body. He’d watched the vid of her close-quarters sparring. Not the best he’d ever seen, but close. And one of the most creative. It was educational. After five years of starvation, he knew the odds were with him if push came to shove. But she’d have the motivation and nothing to lose; he couldn’t let it come to that. He turned to her—she was a scant foot away—and indicated a chair, his heart pounding. “Please.” She sat nonchalantly, leaning back like she was sunning herself on a damn starliner. But her eyes were ice.
