After a mucky hike across a windy, forested headland, I was greeted by a clear view across the wind scoured passage to the spooky abandoned lighthouse a mile offshore.

Waves crash high and white against the shore of the small dark rocky island. The tip of the island and the lighthouse stand up above the very misty horizon line. The sky above is featureless haze. The lighthouse cupola looks haggard and without glass. This is the Tillamook Lighthouse about 1 mile off the Oregon Coast. It has been abandoned for decades. Only seals and birds live there. It is a protected marine sanctuary. Navigation warnings and work is done by more modern systems. Some efforts have been made over the years to rehabilitate the old structure, but it's difficult to reach consistently, as it can only be got to by helicopter. At one time it was used as a mausoleum.
