Slowly I spoke a thought: the weirdstroke’s wreck had lessened on Stranglerback’s northern side near the ground, whereas the greater wreck had stricken above as if the ridge cast a warding shadow. Lady Ilyoel asked how that was canny. I shrugged, looked to Mistress Rozeve, and answered maybe the ridge’s hard stone or the earth’s thickness. Rozeve repeated my shrug and beread it may be so. Ilyoel asked what behoof this might forebode, since to her knowledge, Hoshiasa lay amid this great swamp, and any high ground lay far arear. Yet Lady Loemi answered: ~Eaya yua-ima,~ - “There may be one stead: ~o Kosyl-Saeoelu,~ - “Saeoel’s Mound,” and that she had once gone there. I had heard of Saeoel’s Mound and its sorrowful yoretale. At the Time of the Thief-Queens, after Son’s and Mahyat’s fall and when they had overrun Hanazhyana, Queen Saeoel had fled her city and had so become an outlaw here in the Eastern Swamp. She had hidden for seventy years and more, trying to gather her folk to outcast the outlanders. Saeoel’s Mound had become her thronestead, a hill rising alone amid the swamps, which they had built high hauling stone and earth until it grew a great stronghold. Yet quoth the yoretales, the Mound had stood in Hoshiasa’s shadow, which had forecursed it. After many woes’ run, Queen Saeoel’s princesses and thanes had lost, and under an earthquake (even as we), the stronghold’s wardwall and footstone had cracked. Then the Thief-Queens had beset the mound until all the warders were slain or starved. At last Queen Saeoel had willingly walked forth to death. At the mound’s foot and under Hoshiasa’s shadow, she had cursed the Thief-Queen Koroaeth: ~Heienya o’distimi-thali evanya-ruelis!~ - “You shall never ken peace!” Thus Hoshiasa’s curse had toppled Saeoel the Last Sage-Queen, but also had fallen over the Thief-Queens who had hopelessly fought themselves ere they withered over an old time afterward, and their evil alongwith.
