I'm off social media for the indefinite future, but popping up briefly to post this, because otherwise how will anybody know about it? Me and the brilliant Howard Norman at the Harvard Book Store on January 21, talking about Matthiessen. Free, no ticket required. Please come if you're in Boston.
A brilliant lecture by Edward Carey at Bennington, with a surprise guest appearance by Peter Matthiessen.

This makes me so angry I can barely express it. All for nothing. They blew up AWW 2026 for nothing.

I love the new issue of Orion. Not only is it just the most beautiful magazine, but this issue has big(foot) stuff by @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social, @lancerichardson.bsky.social, and others. And Jeff's & my pal Eric Schaller makes a cameo appearance, which always makes me happy.
Introducing our Winter issue: CRYPTIDS: ON THE TRAIL OF BIGFOOT AND OTHER IMPROBABLE BEASTS. It’s creepy. It’s crawly. It’s steeped in myth and mystery.

Curl up, dive in, and, if you’re one of the sorry souls that doesn’t have a copy, subscribe right here.

If you read a biography and have a different interpretation, or "minor quibbles" — and I mean minor — you should absolutely email the author it. They love that.

My new years resolutions are to actually treat successes as successes, rather than as failures-in-disguise (not successful *enough*); and to lose ten pounds.

This is delightful. As another Australian-turned-American writer, Geraldine Brooks is a bit of a legend in my house.

I interviewed a woman in her 80s, and at the end she asked me if I wanted "this" ... and then handed over a plastic bag filled with more than 120 letters written by Matthiessen from Pearl Harbor in 1945/46. In his archive in Austin, I also found *thousands* of pages about the bigfoot and yeti.
I think we need a mega thread of everyone's craziest archive stories.

Re the trailer for The Odyssey: Nolan's slavish commitment to realism just seems so ... unimaginative? Maybe the final film will surprise me, but I don't see any of the awe and wonder of the poem here.

Rick Nicita, CAA agent, on signing David Lynch in 1981: "The first time I met David, he came into my office wearing a string around his neck with a pen dangling from it. I said, ‘What’s that?’ and he said, ‘It’s a pen to take notes.’ I asked, ‘Do you take notes often?’ He said, ‘No, never.’"

His deed was "his way of conveying his gratitude for staying in Australia, for being granted citizenship."

Each semester I go in my classroom and I try to figure out what we would use to block the doors, if it would be safe to crawl out the windows, where we could hide if there was a mass shooter in campus. It’s such an indictment of this country how we have normalized these preventable tragedies.

Was about to go to Trader Joe's, and then my landlord texted to say there is an active shooter in the neighborhood. Just another day in America.
