as my grad prof (i talk about this dude a lot lol, i loved this man) always said, the only thing a good critic owes a piece of art is to meet it where its at. unfortunately for a lot of people who don't understand criticsm, that basis can lead to anything from praise to a pan

Curiosity is an essential for any good bit of criticism. And what makes a great pan so satisfying to read is a clear curiosity matched with a ruthless investigatory instinct. When someone understands a work inside and out and despises it anyway, that‘s when hate can become a thing of beauty.

After 8 years recovering from burnout, @jopassed.bsky.social bounces back with a record musing those dim moments, all parsed through his collaborative and ecstatic tunes to date. It's not just a return to form, but also a great refinement.

After their 1st mixtape last year, Orteus isn't stopping just yet. On the 1st day of January, their 1st single for their 1st debut album comes in at a compounding blast. Brimming with pummeling digicore tones that put intrigue on what comes next.

It’s that time of the year again! In this new SOUNDS OF THE SEA write-up, I focus on Asunojokei, this japanese black metal group that have been gradually adapting J-rock tones that make for a flashy, and tuneful discography.

Sometimes, simplicity is not a bad thing, as long as the tunes are strong enough. @peaer.bsky.social's long-awaited return sure just did that. A pensive reflection of past & present, with melodic heft that sticks greatly.

This sure is a gut punch that surprised me in a way that I did not expect. Also terrific video worth looking into.
And it's live.

Well, this sure is an intriguing dream. A debut album that delves into amorphous sounds & themings that Sassy 009 explores with its strides and flaws. At the very least, it tends to glow more rather than dull out.

I definitely felt the same way, oh my god.

I cannot exactly escape it all the way - being a critic really demands attention towards the digital world more than before - but oh my goodness, I may as well practice restraint so much more these days.
I think I need to find a way to limit my social media use and just in general try to find something to do off screen. I'm in front of a screen so often, I really don't know how to live without it. I've lost the ability to find joy outside of it. It's definitely a problem.

People keep telling me we just have to "accept" the harms of ChatGPT as the necessary price of progress, & that I'm a Luddite for not using it, but, well, I'm genuinely finding it hard to accept that so many kids simply "have to" die. IMHO it needs a product recall.

A year since this was released, it still sticks. An EP carrying post-punk / jangle pop tones blend Elias Ronnenfelt's raw songwriting & Dean Blunt's misty sound. With a melodic character to show, these worlds meld together greatly.

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

Gitling is a film about communication & language that struggles to reach out to the heart. Despite filled with colors and scoring, it's a case of an intriguing concept stretched too long and dialogue that becomes its double-edged sword.
