Humbled that the National Archives have shortlisted my Giz a Job project as an Outstanding Case Study for their 2024 Year in Archives initiative.

The participant-led community scheme provided a history from below of the 1981 People's March for Jobs, a historic grassroots right-to-work protest.

Santa Cruz 1985 away.

In 1943, with the Pernambuco side facing bankruptcy, club officials agreed to play several fixtures in Natal and Belém in exchange for a bumper payday of 5m Réis.

What followed was the notorious tale of the so-called Excursão da Morte or 'Death Tour' 🧵👇

In 1934, Derby County took their team on tour in Germany. Players were expected to give the right-handed Nazi salute before games.

Enter Jack Kirby.

On the far-left of this photograph you can see Kirby turning his back on the salute as he saw it as wrong.

A direct act of defiance against fascism.

Useless picture, sorry, but today was another official launch @bclivingmuseum.bsky.social. Our main interpretation is via historic characters, and our new Mohammed will demo our foundry and talk about his Bengali heritage. He's based on Ismail's (centre) dad, who moved to Wednesbury in 1957.

Shot i took of the Chorsu Bazaar in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Designed in 1980 by Vladimir Azimov and Sabir Adylov, the blue domed structure is a wonderful example of late Soviet Modernism.

Chorsu translates as both "crossroads" and "four streams" in Tajik.

Early this morning, an autonomous group of New Yorkers reclaimed an F train car, replacing ads with signage reading “A MAN WAS LYNCHED HERE” and Jordan Neely’s name, as a jury deliberates over whether to convict Daniel Penny, Neely’s killer, with his death last May.

A shot i took of a smallholder burning crops in the shadow of his diaolou in Kaiping, China.

A traditional fortified multi-storey watchtower, this particular diaolou was built in the early 1900s using remittances sent home by former villagers who had emigrated to the Southwestern United States.

DAZN rescuing FIFA with a broadcasting deal on the same day Saudi Arabia are linked to investing/rescuing loss-making DAZN, coinciding with FIFA giftwrapping a World Cup to Saudi Arabia. Possibly all entirely unconnected events in which coincidentally all three parties come out as big winners.
FIFA today say there is no TV broadcaster for Club World Cup with DAZN to stream the 63-match tournament for free. Gianni Infantino's name being twice engraved on the new-look trophy wasn't enough to persuade TV broadcasters to strike a deal.
Reminder that FIFA have not announced a single broadcast deal for the Club World Cup, despite opening a tender process in July and calling an emergency meeting with TV execs in September. Real Madrid are not budgeting for it "as there is no precise information." The tournament starts in six months.

Photos from my Giz a Job project exploring the '81 People's March for Jobs, a right-to-work protest that featured a contingent of leftwing punks:

"I hadn’t signed up to join a workers army. We were there to represent ourselves and our people... [I wore] mildly offensive t-shirts - ‘Smash NF Scum’."

Scottish Cup Final, 1988.

Then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was in attendance.

Celtic and Dundee United fans displayed red cards against her and her policies which devastated much of Scotlands industrial heartlands.

This is one example of politics and football mixing.

They are inseparable.
