🌹 Five things the Labour Government is doing for the people of Shirley - and, let’s be honest, for the rest of Southampton too!

Time and again, Southampton has been hit by water outages due to Southern Water failures, with residents left high and dry as a result. 🚱

With the Water White Paper published this week, Labour is undertaking the biggest shake-up of the water industry in a generation.

I spoke to @bethrigby.bsky.social in Manchester recently about how the cost of living is the most important issue for my residents. Tackling it is what we need to all focus on.

Incredibly proud that Labour is today introducing landmark legislation to scrap the Tories' two-child benefit cap, which will lift 450,000 children out of poverty.

The difference a Labour government makes! 🌹💪🏾

So many have contacted me about road safety in their neighbourhoods, and I wrote to the Department sharing problems raised by Southampton residents.

Pleased the new strategy improves things on a local level and across the board.

So can you guess what I’ll be talking about in 2026?

Southampton commuters! Have you remembered that rail fares are frozen ❄️ from January, for the first time in 30 years? 🚂

And remember, this is all part of our wider plan to rebuild our Great British Railways, in public hands.

Lots to be hopeful about in 2026! 🤩

Merry Christmas everyone! ✨🎄🎅🏼

Special thanks to Christmas card competition winners Hallie, Jasmine and Martha from St Denys Primary School for teaching me how to sign and joining me in wishing you all a wonderful day.

The news last week that local services in Southampton will be properly funded for the first time in over a decade was a great early Christmas present. 🎁

In 2026, the council gets a 32% rise in spending power. Having fought hard for this uplift, I am over the moon!

🚨 BREAKING: It's confirmed that the Labour Government is giving Southampton City Council EIGHT TIMES the funding it got under the Tories.

Our city will get £84.6m more for the services we rely on.

Compare that to the £6.9m given by the Conservatives.

My dad used to work on the railways, so this year’s 200 year anniversary is extra special!

Great to be one of the places picked to host the Inspiration Train. Thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the history!

To everyone that works on the railways, thank you! 🚂

Delighted outdated council funding formulas, penalising deprived areas, are being scrapped. 👏🏾

As former Leader of Southampton City Council, I saw how the Tory government pushed us to the brink.

Now, I join Darren Paffey MP and Cllr Alex Winning, calling for our city to benefit from the changes.

Very pleased to see two-child benefit cap lifted in the Budget. 🙏🏾

Having spoken to ministerial colleagues about this, proud we’re taking this step.

Likewise, having pushed for harmful gambling to be properly taxed, pleased we’re raising money for vital services in this way.

Big news today for Southampton commuters! 🚂

We’re freezing rail fares for the first time since the 90s (and since I was still in school)! 🧊💰🧊

The Labour government is doing everything in our power to ease the cost of living crisis. Lots done, more to do. 🌹
